NORFOLK, VA -Former Old Dominion men's soccer player Carlos Mendes (1998-01) has signed with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars of Major League Soccer, becoming the first ODU player to sign with the MLS. Mendes, 24, was among five players signed by the MetroStars and the only current professional. He spent the past two years playing for the A-League's Rochester Raging Rhinos. Before that, Mendes spent a year with the Long Island Rough Riders and also spent a year with the Hampton Roads Mariners of the A-League.

Carlos Mendes, a midfielder, was selected to three straight All-CAA Men's Soccer First Teams (1999-2001) during his time with the Monarchs and was named the 1998 CAA Rookie of the Year. Mendes, who ranks 12th on the all-time list in points (47) and third in assists (25), was also named to the 2000 All-South Atlantic First Team, the 2001 All-South Atlantic Third Team, the VaSID First Team in 2000 and 2001 and the VaSID Second Team in 1999.
Mendes, a native of Mineola, NY, graduated from ODU in 2001 with a degree in Education. He finished his Monarch career with 11 goals, 25 assists and 47 points.
