Tanner's Hat Trick Leads Monarchs over ECU, 3-0

NORFOLK, VA (Oct. 6) -- Old Dominion senior forward Jimmy Tanner (Syracuse,NY) continued his goal scoring tear, landing three strikes on the nightfor his third career hat trick to lead Old Dominion to a 3-0 win over East Carolina. TheMonarchs improve to 7-2-0 on the season, 3-0-0 in the CAA as East Carolina falls to2-3-0, 0-1-0 in the CAA.

Tanner started the scoring in the 27th minute as he launched a15-yard blast off an assist from Michael Tooley (Richmond, VA) and Carlos Mendes (Mineola, NY).The goal gave the Monarchs a 1-0 lead going into halftime, while the team alsohad the lead in shots on goal (11-0) and corners (4-0).

In the 73rd minute, Tanner scored his second goal of the night on agive and go from Tooley which he blasted from five yards out off the right side. Thehat trick came just 11 minutes later this time on a 25-yard shot from the left side on theassist by freshman midfielder Brandon Baker (Parker, CO).

For the game, Old Dominion out-shot East Carolina, 23-2, while takingthe advantage in corners, 10-2. East Carolina keeper R.J. Marvinney made six savesfor the Pirates.

The hat trick marks the third time in as many years that Tanner hascollected three goals against East Carolina and also increases Tanner?s CAA-leading goalsscored mark to 12. Senior goalkeeper Chuck Connelly (Rockville, MD) made two saves torecord the Monarchs 19th-ranked defense its fifth shutout in nine games.

Old Dominion returns to action on Saturday as they host CAA-rivalJames Madison at 7:30 pm at the Old Dominion Soccer Stadium.
