16th Ranked Monarchs Knock Off South Carolina, 3-1

CHARLESTON, SC (october 31) -- Old Dominion men's soccer team, ranked #16 in the nation, knocked off South Carolina, 3-1, today in the final game of the Nike Town College of Charleston tournament. The Monarchs move to 13-3-0 on the season with the win, while the Gamecocks fall to 9-6-2.

Junior forward Tommy Barnicle (Liverpool, England) scored his second goal in as many days to put the Monarchs up 1-0 in the seventh minute, taking the feed from freshman midfielder Brandon Baker (Parker, CO). That goal led the Monarchs into the break with the 1-0 advantage, while the team also led USC in shots, 7-4.

Early in the second half, freshman midfielder Giovonni Solorzano (Irving, TX) connected for his first career goal after freshman defender Anders Haugom (Gjovik, Norway) delivered the ball. Then, in the 61st minute, sophomore midfielder Carlos Mendes (Mineola, NY) took a feed from senior Jimmy Tanner (Syracuse, NY) and beat South Carolina?s All America keeper Henry Ring on a one-on-one to put the Monarchs up 3-0.

Old Dominion later surrendered a goal to the Gamecocks, as Tony Vitagliano scored off a John Harr assist in the 76th minute, but it was too little too late as the Monarchs held on for a 3-1 win. Senior keeper Chuck Connelly (Rockville, MD) made four saves in the net for the Monarchs.

The win is Old Dominion?s tenth in its last 11 games. The Monarchs end the 1999 regular season at home on Sunday, November 7th, as the team hosts CAA-rival UNC Wilmington at 1:00 pm at the Old Dominion Soccer Stadium.
