Series History
ODU and Regent are meeting for the first time.

About ODU
The Monarchs opened their 2026-27 campaign with a 61-49 home win over Western Michigan on Monday night in the first round of the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge. ODU closed out the first half with an 11-0 run to grab a 30-24 lead at halftime. The Silver and Blue were held scoreless for the first five minutes of the second half as the Broncos (0-1) put together a 13-0 start to regain control, 37-30. However, Zacch Wiggins took over the game from there, scoring 19 of a career best 25 points to help ODU pull away for the win.

Bubu Benjamin followed Wiggins with nine points and added four rebounds, two assists, and three steals, while Jared Turner finished with eight points and eight rebounds. Nine different Monarchs found the scoring column as the team combined to shoot 44.6% (25-for-56) from the field, 26.7% (4-for-15) from long range, and 53.8% (7-for-13) at the free-throw line.

This marks the fourth season of the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge. Heading into yesterday’s matchups, the SBC owned a combined 41-33 (.554) record against MAC opponents through the first three years of the Challenge. The conference captured the inaugural MAC-Sun Belt Challenge title in 2023-24, going 15-9 (.625). The two conferences split the title in 2024-25 at 12-12, and last season saw the Sun Belt edged the MAC, 14-12 (.538).

Last night, MAC schools went 7-5 versus Sun Belt schools, with Marshall defeating Buffalo (92-65), Louisiana Tech downing Kent State (85-75), Arkansas State besting Toledo (71-70), and Georgia Southern taking down Ball State (67-55). MAC schools will host the second round of the Challenge in early February, with opponents announced in January and determined by NET rankings, geography, and frequency of past contests.

ODU is led by Head Coach Mike Jones, who is in his third season leading the program. With Monday’s season-opening win over WMU, he improved to 28-41 overall during his time in Norfolk.

About Regent
The Royals played an exhibition game at Norfolk State on Monday night, falling 68-45 to the Spartans. The team trailed 35-15 at halftime, but was only outscored by NSU, 33-30 in the second half. Chase Mullen, a sophomore guard from Virginia Beach, led Regent with eight points while making all four of his shots from the floor.  The son of the late Mario Mullen, who played at ODU from 1992-96 and was a part of the 1995 CAA Championship team that secured a triple-overtime victory over third-seeded Villanova in the NCAA tournament, Chase added six rebounds and three blocks in 26 minutes off the bench.

Antoine Brown followed Mullen with seven points off the bench, while starters Joshua Hanna, Christian Brown, and Chauncey Gilliam netted six points each. As a team, the Royals combined to shoot 33.3% (17-for-51) from the field, including 19.2% (5-for-26) from the perimeter, and 42.9% (6-for-14) at the line. Regent had more bench production on Monday night, leading the Spartans 26-19 in that category, but NSU had more second-chance points (16-9), points in the paint (38-24), fast break points (8-0), and points off turnovers (19-14).

Regent went 6-18 overall last season, to include a 4-5 mark when playing on its home court. Barry Hollenbeck was promoted to head coach on March 4 after previously serving as the team’s associate head coach for the past two seasons. Before coming to Regent, Hollenbeck was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Apprentice School, helping the Builders capture an NSAC Conference Championship as well as a USCAA Small College National Championship in 2023-24.

The Royals return senior guard Antoine Brown, who is Regent’s second all-time leading scorer, along with his younger brother, Christian Brown, and guard Grant Worley. Also back for the team are forwards Hanna, Gilliam, and Dorian Tema. The team was picked to finish fifth in the Coast-To-Coast Conference’s Preseason Poll, with Mary Washington tabbed as the favorite to win the league. Regent will host Penn State Altoona for its season opener this Sunday, Nov. 8.
