NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion women’s soccer heads into a pivotal final game of the regular season against Georgia State in Atlanta on Sunday evening.
The game will be streamed to ESPN+ and live stats will be available.
WHAT’S AT STAKE ON SUNDAY
The GSU Soccer Complex will host a matchup between the second ranked Monarchs (20 points) and the fourth ranked Panthers (17 points) in the Sun Belt with three points separating the two programs. With a head-to-head tiebreaker advantage on the line, and the Monarchs needing a James Madison defeat to outright win the regular season championship, the Monarchs have the potential to finish between first and fourth after Sunday night.
App State is in third place in the conference on 17 points and hosts Troy in Boone, North Carolina on Sunday afternoon. The Monarchs and Mountaineers played out a 0-0 draw on Sunday, September 27 in Boone so the primary criteria for a tiebreaker is not met.
The second criteria is: “The total score difference from all regular season conference matches versus common opponents will be used to determine a higher seed. A goal difference of +/- 4 goals is the maximum allowed per match.” With this context, Old Dominion has a +9-goal-difference and App State has a +5-goal difference against common opponents.
The only caveat is that App State defeated Georgia State on Sept. 18. Their final opponent, the Trojans, did not face the Monarchs this season, so their next game’s result will not affect their common opponent goal difference. Meaning, there is not a 0.0% percent chance that Old Dominion falls to the Panthers by four goals. A reminder: “A goal difference of +/- 4 goals is the maximum allowed per match”, therefore, based upon that criteria, App State cannot earn an advantage under the second tiebreaker rule, triggering the Sun Belt’s third formula.
The third formula is: “If still tied, the highest number of goals scored from all regular season conference matches versus common opponents will be used to determine a higher seed.” Old Dominion has scored 13 goals against common opponents and the Mountaineers have scored nine. App State cannot improve its total goals scored against common opponents due to the Trojans and Monarchs not meeting this season. ODU will automatically earn the tiebreaker over the Mountaineers and will not have to force a Commissioner’s coin toss to determine seeding.
LAST MEETING:
Old Dominion defeated the Panthers, 4-0 on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2035 in the Sun Belt Conference Championship Quarterfinals round. Old Dominion met the Panthers on the final day of last year’s regular season and beat GSU, 2-1 in Norfolk on Wednesday, Oct. 29.
ABOUT ODU:
The Monarchs defeated Coastal Carolina, 2-0 on Senior Day on Sunday, October 25. ODU is 8-6-2 overall and 6-1-2 in the Sun Belt for 20 conference points. Old Dominion is on a three-game win streak against Georgia Southern (2-1), LA Tech (4-0), and Coastal Carolina (2-0).
The Silver and Blue have a +11-goal differential with 23 goals scored and 12 conceded. The Monarchs average 11.4 shots a game and allow opponents to average 8.9 attempts per game. With 12 goals allowed in all games played, three goals allowed in SBC games, and seven shutouts, the Monarchs rank first in the conference in all three statistical categories.
Ashley Economopoulos has a team high 11 points and has recorded all of them in the past five games. She notched a brace against Marshall (3-0) and LA Tech (4-0), scored a goal last time out against CCU (2-0), and provided an assist against JMU in a 2-1 defeat. The Grantville, Pennsylvania native has scored the game-winning goal in three of the last five games.
Five ODU players have earned a Sun Belt Player of the Week this season. Ellie Goodrich got the first selection on September 22 after securing a shutout in ODU’s 1-0 win over ULM. Ashlynn Kulha picked up a Defensive Player of the Week award on Sept. 29, she has five now in the fourth-year defender's collegiate career. Libby Holmes was the latest Monarch to earn Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week on October 6 after she scored the game-winning goal in the Silver and Blue’s 1-0 win against South Alabama.
Ellie Goodrich has made 14 appearances and 12 starts in goal for the Silver and Blue. She has a record of 7-5-2 in net. The Alexandria, Virginia native has seven shutouts, made 23 saves, and has a 74.2% save percentage. Her seven clean sheets are tied for 37th in the nation and is first in the Sun Belt.
ABOUT GSU:
Georgia State is undefeated in its last four games and is 2-0-2 in those games. GSU defeated Louisiana (1-0) on Oct. 11 and Marshall (2-0) on Oct. 22 while earning a point against Coastal Carolina on Oct. 15 (1-1), and most recently drawing JMU in Harrisonburg, Virginia (1-1). GSU is in fourth place in the conference (5-2-2 SBC) and with a victory over the Monarchs, would jump the Monarchs in the SBC standings on the final day.
The Panthers have a +18-goal differential with 33 goals scored and 15 conceded. They average just shy of two goals a contest (1.94) and allow a touch under a goal a game (0.88). GSU allows 12.2 shots a game while taking 12.0. But, the Panthers average 44.6% of the shots on target while holding their opponents to a 39.6% clip.
UP NEXT:
The Sun Belt Tournament seeding will be decided after the conclusion of ODU’s game on Sunday evening. The Tournament will take place from November 9-14 in Foley, Alabama at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex.
