POWELLS POINT, N.C. – Old Dominion men’s golf finished the final round of the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon at Kilmarlic Golf Club, placing 12th as a team.
“Not the result we wanted this week,” said ODU head coach Austin Phillips. “We made way too many big numbers to be competitive. This team is better than the results, and just needs some belief that we can be a team no one sees coming. There is some low hanging fruit for the spring that can make us instantly better. This semester has had some ups and downs, but we are headed in the right direction, and it will be a special spring.”
Joe MacPherson was the top performer for the Monarchs, marking the fourth time this fall he has led the team. The Aberlady, Scotland native started off the tournament with an opening round of four-over par 74 on Sunday, but posted a three-under 68 on Monday. MacPherson then shot a two-over 73 for his final 18 holes at Kilmarlic to finish tied for 26th at three-over 216.
James Page and Roman Roth were next, with both Monarchs handing in scores of five-over 218 to tie for 34th. Page, a third year from London, England, had his best round on Monday with a two-under 69. He fired an opening round of 73 and added a final round of 76. For Roth, a third year from Wayland, Iowa, he went one-over at 72 the first two days and recorded a 74 on Tuesday.
Quin Covington went 11-over with a 224 to tie for 68th, and Jakub Sutor tied for 76th at 14-over 227. Garret Cameron, Verrti Hamalainen, and Heath Stout all played as individuals. Cameron turned in a 12-over 225 to tie for 71st in his first appearance this fall, Hamalainen made his collegiate debut and tied for 76th with a 14-over total of 227, and Stout finished 89th with a three-day total of 240 (+27).
As a team, the Silver and Blue combined for a 22-over par 874. James Madison and Georgetown both carded three-under 849s to tie for first in the team standings. Georgetown’s George McGlinn converted a 30-foot putt on the 18th hole to force both an individual and team playoff between the Dukes and Hoyas.
McGlinn made bogey while JMU’s Michael Hake made par to win the sudden death playoff. On the team side, the Dukes shot an even par while the Hoyas went two-over.
“It was an honor hosting this tournament with all the legacy and history it has,” continued Phillips. “I’m thankful for Kilmarlic and Murray [Rudisill] for creating a special tournament. I look forward to this continued partnership and know it will be a great tournament for years to come.”
The Monarchs will open their spring season at the Palmas del Mar Collegiate, hosted by UNC Greensboro at Palmas del Mar Golf Club on Feb. 12-14 in Humacao, Puerto Rico.
