RICHMOND, Va. – Old Dominion field hockey fended off Richmond in a 4-3 overtime win at Crenshaw Field on Sunday afternoon.

“Another gutsy win, and we had a lot of fun along the way!” Head Coach Andrew Griffiths said. “We played some really nice team hockey, moving the ball well, playing fast, and creating chances. We had strong performances from a lot of players, and obviously Serena stands out with her three goals and helping to control the game from the backfield.

The first quarter was scoreless between Old Dominion (10-3) and Richmond (8-5), with just an ODU penalty corner as the highlight. However, Serena Langendoen put the Monarchs on the board four minutes into the second quarter off of a corner. Richmond was unable to respond, sending ODU into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

The Spiders tied the score under three minutes into the third quarter, when Clara Larripa found the net off of a penalty corner. With under 10 minutes remaining, Valen Luna Paratore took the lead for Richmond following a green card issued to Madison Zalewski that put Old Dominion down a man. With 48 seconds remaining, Avery Jackson tied the game to send the Monarchs into the fourth quarter tied at two.

Langendoen gave Old Dominion the lead back with five minutes remaining in the game off a penalty corner, though Maura Seeger tied the game at three two minutes later. Neither team was able to regain the lead, sending the game into overtime.

Under six minutes into overtime, Langendoen collected both a hat trick and game-winning goal off a penalty corner with help from Zalewski and Nicolette Saccomandi.

Richmond outshot Old Dominion 14-13, though ODU had nine corners to UR’s six.

Langendoen led the Monarchs in goals with three, Jackson following suit with one. Zalewski and Sacomandi had two assists each, with Cosima Perleth collecting one.

Suus Broers recorded six saves for the Monarchs.

“Richmond has good players and it was their senior day so a tough environment to play in, and once again our team showed resilience and toughness under pressure,” Griffiths added. “I’m proud of the team after a challenging weekend of travel and two quality wins on the road.”
