PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Old Dominion field hockey defeated Temple, 2-1, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Friday afternoon.
“This was a great win for us, because it was all about determination and mental toughness,” Head Coach Andrew Griffiths said. “We found a way to get the second goal on a beautiful deflection from Sofia. Temple is always a tough place to play, so we are happy to be driving home with a win.”
Madison Zalewski put Old Dominion (10-3, 2-2) on the board under five minutes into the game after a shot attempt from Lotte Haagmas. It was quiet on both ends for the remainder of the first quarter, though ODU had a chance to increase its lead with a penalty corner in the last five seconds. However, the Monarchs were unable to score, keeping their 1-0 lead over Temple (5-9, 1-3).
The Owls tied the game with under four minutes remaining in the half, as Rozlyn Maciejewski found the goal off of a penalty corner with help from Amanda Martin and Mathea Lassalle. Neither team was able to gain the lead, sending them into halftime tied at 1-1.
The highlight of the third quarter was two penalty corners in Old Dominion’s favor, though neither team was able to add onto its score. However, Sofia Marciano regained ODU’s lead with a goal under six minutes into the fourth quarter. The Monarchs' defense held on and prevented Temple from scoring on two penalty corners, collecting their second BIG EAST Conference win, 2-1.
ODU outshot Temple 15-8, including 12-4 shots on goal, though both teams collected three corners each.
Zalewski and Marciano led the way for the Monarchs in goals with one each, while Haagmans had the team’s lone assist. Marciano and Haagmans also tied in game-high shots with three each.
Goalkeeper Suus Broers collected three saves.
“We looked dangerous on fast attacks and counter attacks and certainly should have scored more goals with the chances we had,” Griffiths added. “We had a number of attacking breakaways and one-on-ones with the goalkeeper, and we just didn’t have our scoring touch. Temple's goalkeeper played very well and made it hard for us.”
