BURLINGTON, N.C. – Quin Covington finished tied for 11th at eight-under par 205 and Old Dominion men’s golf tied for sixth in the team standings following the final round of the Elon Phoenix Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at Alamance Country Club.
“I’m proud of how we finished both days and brought ourselves back into the rounds,” said ODU head coach Austin Phillips. “We need to figure out our first rounds and start better on days, but the guys keep getting better. [We] just have to keep working and give ourselves a chance to win at Kilmarlic.”
Entering the day tied for 15th after posting a one-over 72 and a six-under 65 for the first two rounds on Monday, Covington moved up four spots thanks to a final round of three-under 68. His two-day total marks a new career best for score versus par as well as his third career Top-15 outing. The second year from Cary, North Carolina made 14 birdies as well as an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole during his second lap around the course.
Joe MacPherson was next for the Monarchs, tying for 33rd with a final tally of one-under par 212. Jakub Sutor had his best outing so far this fall as he handed in an even 213 to tie for 44th. James Page went two-over with a 215 to tie for 59th, both of which are season bests for him. Roman Roth rounded out ODU’s scorecard with a three-over 216 to tie for 67th.
The Silver and Blue finished alongside George Washington and UNC Wilmington on the team leaderboard. Campbell came in first at 32-under par 820, tournament host Elon was second at 28-under 824, and Western Carolina rounded out the top three at 23-under 829.
Wake Forest’s Tom Haberer earned individual medalist honors, edging Campbell’s Benjamin Killingstad by one stroke with a 17-under par 196. North Carolina’s Ethan Pascal took third place after carding a 14-under 199.
The Monarchs will conclude their fall slate by hosting the 16th annual ODU/OBX Intercollegiate on Oct. 25-27 at Kilmarlic Golf Club in Powells Points, N.C.
