FAIRFAX, Va. - Old Dominion women’s rowing wrapped up competition at the Occoquan Chase on Sunday evening in Fairfax, Virginia. The Monarchs raced in four different competitions and had three first place finishes.
“Sixty-two percent of our entered boats finished in a medal position and won 75% of the events we entered,” said ODU Head Coach Brian Conley. “Today the stats reflect the work we are doing and the team stepped up in a very challenging set of circumstances. The remnants of the hurricane made for cold and wet conditions. Yet every boat of ours achieved our goal for the races and that was being consistent over the 5000 meters from start to finish."
“Every split was where we wanted to be this early in the season. It was awesome to see our freshmen have such a dominating performance winning both of their events by as much as 6 minutes over an opposing team. I’m excited for this team and what they can do this year. We have more work to do and what used to seem impossible is slowly beginning to become something we are believing is possible.”
Old Dominion’s first race of the Chase was the Open 8+ and it set off at 9:40 a.m. ODU had its two boats in bow 67 and 70, respectively. The Silver and Blue finished in fourth and fifth out of nine other competitors while Georgetown captured first place.
The Monarchs took on VCU’s crew club in the Novice 8+ and edged the Rams with an official time of 20:37.598. VCU finished with a time of 25:06.724 to end the race in second place.
The Silver and Blue competed in the Open 4+ and had three boats in the mix. The Monarchs captured first, third, and a fourth placed finish. Second year Monroe LaRochelle finished ahead of the pack with a time of 20:38.876.
ODU rounded out the Occoquan Chase with a Novice 4+ race where the Monarchs lined up two boats and competed against one boat from Virginia Tech. The Silver and Blue finished in first and second with times of 21:04.371 and 23:04.572, respectively. Virginia Tech ended the race in third with a final time of 27:09.612.
