NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion field hockey shut out Queens (NC), 9-0, on Monday afternoon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex
“It was a good team performance today overall,” Head Coach Andrew Griffiths said. “We had a lot of contributions from different players, and had multiple goalscorers, which is positive. We moved the ball quickly and effectively in certain periods. We also limited their chances, and when the ball did get through, our backs and goalkeepers found a way to earn the shutout.”
Josie Painter put Old Dominion (9-3) on the board first with a goal under three minutes into the first quarter. Serena Langendoen and Cruz Canepa both scored a minute apart as the first quarter neared to the end, giving ODU a 3-0 lead over Queens (3-8).
Madison Zalewski found the goal under 10 minutes into the second quarter, while Sofia Marciano scored two minutes later. With under two minutes remaining in the half, Cosima Perleth scored, extending ODU’s lead to 6-0 as the team went into the locker room.
The Monarchs had one goal in the third quarter, which came from Avery Jackson 11 minutes into play. However, Lotte Haagmans scored to start the fourth quarter off strong with help from Perleth. To end the game strong, Langendoen recorded her second goal of the day as well 10 minutes later, solidifying ODU’s 9-0 victory over Queens.
ODU had 24 shots against Queens’ three, including 15 shots on goal. The Monarchs also had 12 total team assists.
Langendoen led the team in goals scored with two, while seven other Monarchs tied with one goal each. Perleth and Marciano tied the team in assists with two.
Goalkeeper Suus Broers had one save in 37 minutes in the net, while Alexa Murphy took over for the remaining 23 minutes.
