Former Old Dominion University women’s tennis standout Yuliia Starodubtseva advanced to the third round of a Grand Slam event for the second time this year after defeating No. 32 Maria Sakkari 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 at the US Open on Thursday.
Starodubtseva began the tournament on September 1 by cruising to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ella Seidel.
A native of Ukraine, Starodubtseva will face No. 2 Elena Rybakina on Saturday, Sept. 5.
Earlier this season, Starodubtseva advanced to the third round of the French Open and reached the finals of the Charleston Open. Her run in the French open featured a 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) win over Rybakina.
