NORFOLK, Va. – #18 Old Dominion field hockey continues its road test against #2 Princeton and Penn in Chapel Hill, North Carolina this weekend.
The Tigers open their 2026 season against the Monarchs on Friday, Sept. 4 at 3 p.m., while ODU challenges Penn on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m.
Old Dominion fell to both schools last season on the road.
ABOUT ODU
ODU has begun its fall campaign with a 3-2 win over Power 4 opponent Ohio State in Columbus, and a 7-0 shutout against Bellarmine. The Monarchs were picked to finish third in the BIG EAST as head coach Andrew Griffiths enters his 14th year alongside new assistant coach Daan Polders.
This strong start to the season earned the Monarchs a national ranking at No. 18, including BIG EAST weekly honor roll mentions for Josie Painter and Serena Langendoen.
Sofia Marciano recorded two goals against the Knights while Langendoen and Painter collected goals against both Bellarmine and Ohio State, though Painter leads the team in points and assists with seven and two respectively. Senior goalkeeper Suus Broers collected eight saves and two goals allowed in her 2026 openers.
ABOUT PRINCETON
Princeton enters the 2026 season as national runners up last year, where the Tigers fell to Northwestern, 2-1, in double overtime. The NFHCA has ranked Princeton No. 2 in the country following its impressive 18-4 2025 season, and the Tigers are projected to finish second in the preseason Ivy League coaches poll.
Sophomore Caitlin Thompson returns to Princeton after coming in second in goals scored last season with eight, as well as junior Pru Lindsey, who had seven goals. Seasoned goalie Olivia Caponiti returns for her senior season after appearing in 21 games for the Tigers, recording 48 saves and 18 goals allowed in 2025. She accounted for seven shutouts and a season-high seven saves in the national championship game.
ABOUT PENN
Penn ended 2025 with a 9-7 record, where six losses came from nationally ranked opponents. The Quakers open their 2026 season against #10 North Carolina on Sept. 4, a team Penn lost to in 2025 by a 6-2 score.
Senior Honor Roberts returns to the Quakers after finishing second in goals scored with seven. She is one of three multi-goal scorers from 2025 to return, which includes Beau Lily Barrington-Hibbert and Emma Nahon, who both recorded two goals. Senior goalkeeper Ruby de Frees also returns to Princeton following a season with 79 saves and 37 goals allowed in 16 games played.
