GREENVILLE, N.C. – Joe MacPherson earned co-medalist honors and Old Dominion men’s golf finished tied for third following Tuesday’s final round at the Ironwood Collegiate Classic, hosted by East Carolina at Ironwood Golf & Country Club.
“Nerves got the best of early on today and we shot ourselves in the foot,” said ODU head coach Austin Phillips. “I’m proud of the fight back and we just have to continue getting used to being in this situation.”
A third year from Aberlady, Scotland, MacPherson opened the tournament with a three-under par 69 in Monday’s first round. He made five putts for birdie, including three on the front nine, and also made an eagle on the par-4 12th hole. He followed that effort with a six-under 66 for his second lap around the course, converting seven birdies and only logging one bogey. MacPherson then capped off the Classic with a final round of 73 on Tuesday.
He is the first Monarch to win a tournament since alumni Jakob Henriksson finished first at William & Mary’s Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate on March 29-30, 2021. This marks MacPherson’s first career Top-5 performance.
"I'm very happy to earn my first victory, and proud of how I was able to stay focused through a long 36-hole day. I'm happy with how the team bounced back this week and looking forward to closing out the fall strong," said MacPherson.
“Joe played great this week and it’s so good to see him get the win. He’s played well all year, so well-deserved,” continued Phillips.
Roman Roth wasn’t far behind MacPherson. The Wayland, Iowa native recorded a five-under par 211 to finish tied for fifth. He started off with a two-under 70 in the first round, then went four-under with a 68 for the second round thanks to five made birdies. Roth then carded a one-over 73 for his final round.
Quin Covington was next for the Monarchs, tying for 38th at four-over 220. Heath Stout, who was playing as an individual, shot a seven-over 223 to tie for 55th. Jakub Sutor tied for 59th at eight-over 224, and James Page went 10-over with a 226 to tie for 64th.
As a team, the Silver and Blue combined for a three-under par 861 and secured their second Top-5 performance this fall. The host Pirates came in first place at seven-under 857, Georgetown took second with a five-under 859, and High Point also posted a final tally of 861 to finish even in the standings with ODU. North Carolina Central’s Iszac Bertagnole was the other individual co-medalist.
The Monarchs will be back in the Tar Heel State on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 12-13 for the Elon Phoenix Invitational. Elon is hosting the two-day tournament at Alamance Country Club in Burlington, N.C.
