ASHEBORO, N.C. – Old Dominion women’s golf finished in fifth place out of 12 teams at the Tot Hill Farm Invitational, with Barbara Car and Puneet Bajwa both tying for 10th in the individual standings.
“We handled the first 36 holes in one day, the first of the year, really well. Our team overcame tough course conditions and slow play to put us in a good position on the leaderboard. We all thought today’s scores would have been a little lower, but sometimes golf has other plans. We will be better next time out,” said ODU head coach Mallory Kane.
As a team, the Silver and Blue combined for a 28-over par 892, just one stroke back from Coastal Carolina and one stroke ahead of Charlotte. Campbell took first place at four-under 860 while tournament host College of Charleston came in second with a 54-hole total of 869 (+5). UNC Wilmington rounded out the top three with a 12-over 876.
Campbell’s Fanni Gronlund and South Carolina individual Yana Beeli shared co-medalist honors after both golfers went six-under with a pair of 210s.
For the Monarchs, Car and Bajwa both turned in two-over par 218s. For Car, the Vodice, Slovenia native made three birdies and eagled the par-4 17th hole at Tot Hill Farm Golf Club for an opening round of 70. She followed with an even 72 in the second round before going four-over with a 76 for the final round. Bajwa, a native of Mohali, India, recorded a pair of one-over 73s for her first two rounds and then handed in a 72 for her final round.
Ellie Johnson was next for ODU, tying for 35th with a final score of 13-over par 229. Lucia Gonzalez was one stroke back of Johnson and tied for 38th at 14-over 230, and Darby Hancock tied for 63rd with a 26-over 242.
The Monarchs will host the sixth annual Evie Odom Invitational on Friday through Sunday, Oct. 9-11, at Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach, Va. for their final event of the fall.
“The Evie Odom Invitational is our favorite tournament of the year and we are looking forward to hosting next weekend,” added Kane.
