NEW ORLEANS - Old Dominion’s Ashlynn Kulha was named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week after a pair of shutout performances against Sun Belt opponents, the conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.
This is the fifth time in the fourth year defender's collegiate career that she has been named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week.
ODU picked up two points across two games against two of the top offensive powers in the conference. Old Dominion drew Louisiana, 0-0 on Thursday night and drew App State, 0-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The Ragin’ Cajuns had a +16-goal differential while averaging three goals per game to rank first in the Sun Belt entering the game. UL averaged 14.8 shots per game and were held to just eight total shots with only two shots on target against the Silver and Blue.
The Mountaineers averaged 1.8 goals per game and 14.9 shots heading into the match. App State mustered four shots against Kulha and ODU’s back line and only had one shot on target.
Kulha is the first-ever Sun Belt women’s soccer player to earn back-to-back Sun Belt Defender of the Year awards this past season. She was also awarded Sun Belt Preseason Defender of the Year in back-to-back seasons and was named to the All-Sun Belt Preseason Team. The Holly Springs, North Carolina native was selected to the All-Southeast Regional Team by the United Soccer Coaches this summer.
