WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – #20 Old Dominion field hockey defeated William & Mary, 2-0, on the road Monday evening.
“We drove up 64 and took care of business!” Head Coach Andrew Griffiths said. “We moved the ball really well with speed and intensity. We have been working on this all week, and we created a ton of chances in the game. We just didn’t quite connect on a lot of our opportunities and just missed the goal on a number of chances. So we will work on that finishing element this week. The other positive thing is that we showed the fitness and strength to win two games on back-to-back days.”
The first quarter was quiet on both sides of the field apart from one shot for Old Dominion (7-2) and two shots for William & Mary (1-7). However, with one minute remaining, Serena Langendoen put ODU on the board after a penalty corner to send the Monarchs into the second quarter up 1-0.
After a penalty corner went without scoring, Lotte Haagmans extended ODU’s lead with a goal under eight minutes into the second quarter. While one corner would be awarded to both teams, neither were able to score, as Old Dominion went into halftime up 2-0.
The highlight of the third quarter was a corner in favor of the Monarchs, though both teams remained scoreless. And while ODU would get two corners in the fourth quarter with W&M collecting one, both teams still were unable to score, giving Old Dominion a 2-0 shutout win.
ODU outshot the Tribe, 10-6 and had six corners to W&M’s two.
Langendoen and Haagmans led the way for ODU with a goal each, while Josie Painter had one assist. Haagmans also led in shots with three, as goalkeeper Alexa Murphy had one save, marking her first collegiate shutout.
“Tomorrow will be a well-deserved day off for the team to focus on school, and then we will prepare for Liberty on Friday,” Griffiths added.
