ST. MARY’S, Md. - Old Dominion sailing wrapped up competition at the SMC Open hosted by St. Mary’s (Md.), ODU fielded two boats that finished 13th and 15th, respectively.
“We had beautiful conditions at St Mary's College this weekend,” said ODU Associate Head Coach Tyler Colvin. “It’s a venue we sail often, and it was a great opportunity for some of our younger team members to get some experience there. With the wind from the northwest, you have to be able to start well and get over to the bigger breeze filling in from the left. This kind of closed-course strategy and tactics isn’t something that we’ve seen yet this fall. Overall I thought our upperclassmen did a great job of helping our underclassmen learn and improve.”
Fordham, George Washington, Georgetown, Navy, Old Dominion, Penn, and St. Mary’s all competed over the weekend.
Georgetown finished on top with boats finishing in first and second, respectively. Navy’s first boat tallied 151 points to earn third place, and its second boat placed fifth behind Fordham’s second boat in fourth. Penn’s second boat grabbed a sixth-place finish followed by the Rams’ first boat in seventh. Host St. Mary’s (Md.) first boat placed eighth and the Hoyas’ second boat earned a ninth placed finish. Penn’s first boat finished in 10th, St. Mary’s (Md.) second boat placed 11th, and GW’s first boat earned 12th. Old Dominion’s second boat finished in 13th and its first boat placed 15th with Georgetown’s third boat earning 14th. George Washington’s second boat rounded out the competition with a 16th placed finish.
For tiebreakers, Penn and St. Mary’s went to a head-to-head matchup to determine the 10th and 11th placed finishes where the Quakers came out ahead. ODU also had a tiebreaker and GW for the 15th and 16th spot and the Monarchs edged the Hoyas to take 15th.

Old Dominion sailing will be spread out next weekend when the Monarchs head to Annapolis, Maryland for the Van Duyne Trophy, Hanover, New Hampshire for the Women’s ACC Round One, and Charleston, South Carolina for the Charleston Fall Regatta. All three events will take place on Saturday, October 3-4 and events will last all day.
