NORFOLK, Va. – #20 Old Dominion field hockey defeated Saint Louis in a strong 5-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
“It was a solid performance today,” Head Coach Andrew Griffiths said. “We moved the ball well and created a lot of quality goalscoring opportunities. We also had four different goalscorers. This is an excellent sign for our team, and consistent with many of our games this year, getting contributions from a lot of different players. It will be a quick turnaround looking ahead to William & Mary tomorrow evening.”
Saint Louis (2-7) came out strong in the first quarter, as Brynn Newborn found the goal just over two minutes into play following a penalty corner. However, Old Dominion (6-2) responded five minutes later, with Serena Langendoen scoring off of a penalty stroke. ODU would have one penalty corner before the end of the quarter, leaving both teams tied at one.
Sofia Marciano scored five minutes into the second quarter with help from Lotte Haagmans. The Monarchs collected two penalty corners, though both were unsuccessful. It wasn’t until there was five minutes left in the half that Josie Painter scored to increase ODU’s lead, sending them into the locker room up 3-1.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, though ODU dominated the field, with five penalty corners going its way. The next goal wouldn’t come until three minutes into the fourth quarter, when Langendoen scored off another penalty stroke. Two penalty corners for Old Dominion were broken up by one by Saint Louis, though Avery Jackson scored one off ODU’s second corner to solidify the Monarchs’ win. Despite a late corner, Saint Louis was unable to respond, as ODU won 5-1.
The Monarchs outshot the Billiken 21-4. Old Dominion had 14 corners to Saint Louis' three.
Langendoen led the Monarchs with two goals and a team-high 12 shots. Marciano, Painter, and Jackson had one goal each. Goalkeeper Alexa Murphy had two saves.
