NEW ORLEANS – Old Dominion women’s golfer Lucia Gonzalez has been named the Sun Belt Women’s Golfer of the Week, as announced by the league office on Thursday. It marks her first career weekly honor.
A fourth year from Monterrey, Mexico, Gonzalez led the Monarchs at the Lady Paladin Invitational last weekend at the Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, South Carolina. After hitting an opening round of 73 on Friday and carding a 70 in Saturday’s second round, she entered Sunday’s final round tied for 12th place at one-under par. Gonzalez proceeded to make seven birdies with a four-under 68 for her final trip around the course. That effort propelled her into a tie for eighth place at five-under 211.
Gonzalez was one of three ODU golfers to finish under par as the Monarchs came in fifth place out of 12 teams with an even total of 864.
ODU will head to Asheboro, North Carolina to play in the Tot Hill Farm Invitational next Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 28-29. The College of Charleston is hosting the two-day tournament at Tot Hill Farm Golf Club.
