NEW YORK – Old Dominion forward Sofia Marciano and defender Serena Langendoen were named BIG EAST Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, the BIG EAST announced on Tuesday.
The duo was instrumental in ODU’s top five win over North Carolina, a 5-4 overtime win that saw the Monarchs come back from deficits of 3-0 and 4-1.
Langendoen had two goals and an assist, including the game-winner in overtime on a penalty stroke. A native of Rotterdam, The Netherlands, Langendoen’s first goal put the Monarchs on the board to make the score 3-1. She then ended the contest after the Monarchs were awarded a penalty stroke, she calmly tucked her shot in the right post to give ODU its first win over a top five ranked team since a 2-1 win over Virginia in 2021.
Marciano also scored a pair of goals as her tallies made the score 4-2 and 4-3. A transfer from St. Francis (Pa.), Marciano has four goals on the season, trailing only Langendoen, who is the team leader with five.
Langendoen and Marciano lead the Monarchs into battle on Friday, Sept. 18 when the No. 20 Monarchs host Providence at 2 p.m.

The 2026 Jeff and Billye Athletics and Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony is set for Friday, Sept. 25 at Chartway Arena.
ODU field hockey alumna and midfielder Sarah Breen will be honored along with four other inductees. Breen was a two-time All-Big East First Team and All-CAA First Team selection. She earned three NFHCA Division I All-American honors. Breen was a second team selection in 2015, and secured a third team nod in 2014. Breen finished her Old Dominion career with 104 points from 44 goals and 16 assists.
