NORFOLK, Va. - #22 Old Dominion men’s soccer aims to finish its final game of a five-game homestand strong against UMBC on Friday, September 11 at 7 p.m. ODU then faces in-state foe VCU on Monday, September 14 in Richmond, Virginia at 3 p.m.
ODU’s game on Friday against the Retrievers will not be streamed. The Monarchs’ game on Monday will be streamed to ESPN+. Live stats will be available for both games.
LAST MEETING:
ODU defeated a 4-0 UMBC team on Friday, September 12, 2025 at Retriever Park, 1-0. Lewis Rourke broke the deadlock in the 78th minute thanks to an assist by Marcelo Randolf. The Retrievers took six shots and registered three shots on target.
The Monarchs fell to the Rams, 2-1 at the ODU Soccer Complex on Friday, August 29 last season. ODU opened the scoring from Jake Lane in the 24th minute of action off a double assist from Michael Eberle and Alex Kryazhev. The second half was dominated by the Rams who had 12 shots, ODU conceded their first goal after a rocket from Lucas White careened off the hands of Statham and was bundled over the line by Hakim Musabbah in the 73rd minute. The Monarchs conceded a second goal in the 87th from Ibrahim Mohammed thanks to an assist by Nikita Hayes who found the midfielder darting into the box from the right side of the box and Mohammed slotted it in to make it 2-1.
ABOUT ODU:
The Silver and Blue under third year head coach Tennant McVea have gotten off to a 5-0 start in their non-conference schedule. ODU has outscored its opponents, 20-5 and have scored 5+ goals on two occasions. After this start, the Monarchs were ranked #22 in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll for the first time in eight years.
Old Dominion’s +15-goal differential is ranked best in Division I. The Monarchs’ 20 goals rank second in the national leaderboard. ODU also ranks second in scoring offense (4.25) and is fourth in the country in points per game (11.2). The Silver and Blue rank third in the country in total points (56), fifth in shots on goal per game (9.4), and are tied for eighth in total assists (16).
Fourth year forward Rourke was named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday this week. Rourke’s form to start the season has also put him near the top of the national leaderboards. He is tied for fifth in the country in total points (11), tied for 21st in total assists (3), and tied for 26th in shots on goal per game (1.75).
Fourth year forward Jason Purks has scored four goals in five contests to rank tied for 12th in the nation in total goals. He is also tied for 12th in Division I with an average of 0.8 goals per game. Purks has taken two penalty kicks and converted both for a 100% success rate to rank tied for first in Division I.
Fourth year defender Ludovico Vicini has provided three assists and scored one goal, his three assists are tied for 21st in the nation. Fifth year defender David Chapman ranks tied for second on the Monarchs in total goals (2) and assists (2). His two assists are tied for 73rd in the nation and his two goals rank are tied for 95th in the nation.
Second year goalkeeper Alexander Aguilar has provided two assists to rank tied 73rd in the nation. The Manassas, Virginia native has logged 450 minutes in net to rank tied for seventh in the nation. Aguilar has recorded two clean sheets this season to rank 18th in Division I.
ABOUT UMBC:
The Retrievers are 2-1-2 through five games played and are 0-1-1 in their last two games. UMBC’s opening game of the season against UNCW was called a no contest, their first official result of 2026 was a 3-2 win against Loyola (Md.). UMBC then defeated Presbyterian, 5-1, but fell to George Washington, 3-0 and drew Lehigh, 0-0.
The Retrievers have a +2-goal differential and average two goals per game. UMBC averages 19.1 shots per game and a 27.1% shot on goal percentage. First year forward Flynn Holdem was named America East Rookie of the Week on August 24. Third year forward Abdul Kamara was named AE Offensive Player of the Week on August 31.
Abdul leads the Retrievers with three goals for six points followed by first year defender Nico Banks with one goal and one assist for three points. Holdem, third year forward Gunder Miller, third year defender Adamo Pantaleo, and fourth year midfielder Aidom Tadesse have all scored on goal each.
ABOUT VCU:
The Rams are looking for their first win of the season after getting off to an 0-3-2 start. However, VCU has battled a tough schedule with three of their five opponents ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25.
The Rams opened the season with a 4-1 defeat at #14 UNC Greensboro and then drew Wake Forest, 0-0 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Rams drew #14 High Point, 1-1 in High Point, North Carolina and most recently fell, 3-1 at #15 Marshall. VCU takes on last season's Sun Belt Conference Champion, UCF on Friday at 3 p.m.
The Rams have a -9-goal differential and have scored three goals. First year defender Jonas Pettersen, fifth year defender Ty Johnson, and first year forward Kimarly Scott are all tied for the team lead with two points from one goal. Third year midfielder Mohammed Ibrahim has contributed one assist for one point.
Second year goalkeeper Manuel Monteiro has made five starts for the Rams and played 450 minutes in net. He has made 14 saves and kept one shutout.
