NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion men’s basketball announced on Thursday that the Monarchs will host VCU for an exhibition game on Saturday, October 17 at Chartway Arena.
The Monarchs will travel to Richmond for an exhibition game against the Rams next season.
“We are looking forward to using our scrimmage/exhibition schedule to prepare us for our season. And having VCU in Chartway will be a great opportunity to do just that - a quality opponent that will challenge us on both ends of the floor. We look forward to the challenge,” said ODU head coach Mike Jones, who is entering his third season leading the program.
The two in-state rivals last played each other on Saturday, December 11, 2021 in Norfolk, a meeting that went to the Rams, 75-66. VCU holds a 53-44 lead in the all-time series that began during the 1968-69 season. Both programs were formerly members of the CAA.
ODU went 12-21 this past season with a 7-11 record in Sun Belt play. The Monarchs defeated 14th-seeded ULM, 87-80 in the opening round of the Sun Belt Championship, but saw their season end with a narrow 88-84 defeat to 10th-seeded Georgia Southern despite a tournament record 45-point performance by guard Jordan Battle. The Silver & Blue have six returners from last season and have added seven transfers, two freshmen, and a freshman walk-on.
VCU, which has been a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference since July 2012, is coming off a 2025-26 campaign that saw the team finish 28-8 overall with a 15-3 mark against league opponents. The Rams defeated Dayton, 70-62 in the A10 title game to earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. They defeated sixth-seeded No. 21 North Carolina, 82-78 in the opening round before falling to third-seeded No. 13 Illinois, 76-55 in the second round.

Men’s and women’s basketball season tickets for the 2026-27 season will go on sale soon, and this year’s package will include the exhibition game versus VCU.
