NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion’s women’s sailing team finished in fourth in the Tulane Women’s Team Race in New Orleans and the open sailing team placed eighth in the Prosser Trophy on Lake Cayuga in Ithaca, New York this weekend.

“At the Prosser Trophy we finished with a disappointing 3-11 record but had strong wins over Pennsylvania, Fordham, and Hobart & William Smith,” said ODU head coach Mitch Brindley. “I was happy with the improvements we have made in our starts, but we kept getting into foul trouble and had difficulty holding the lead early in the races.”

ODU women’s sailing finished with a record of 3-12 but got off to a hot start going 2-1 in the first round. ODU beat Tulane (2-3-5) and Charleston (1-2-4) but fell to Stanford (3-4-6). Round two saw ODU go 1-2 and picked up another victory against Charleston (1-2-5) but dropped to Tulane (2-4-6) and Stanford (4-5-6).

ODU went winless in the final three rounds of the competition and Stanford finished 15-0 to take home first place. Charleston finished with a record of 7-8 to take second, Tulane placed third (5-10), and ODU came in fourth (3-12).

The Prosser Trophy was delayed due to the breeze not being strong enough to start in the morning. Conditions improved in the afternoon, and the first race took place at 1:25 p.m. Day one saw the Monarchs finish with a record of 3-11, ODU went 1-6 in round one with a victory over Fordham (2-3-4).

The Silver and Blue went 2-5 in round two and grabbed wins over Hobart & William Smith (1-2-6) and Pennsylvania (1-2-6). The Monarchs finished the day in eighth place and missed out on the next round of action. Navy and Georgetown both went 2-0 in the next round with Fordham and Hobart & William going 1-1 and St. Mary’s (Md.) and Pennsylvania went 0-2.
