NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion University head men’s basketball coach Mike Jones announced on Thursday the addition of Orlando Vandross to his coaching staff.

Vandross will serve as an assistant coach and will assist with the team’s recruiting efforts.

“I am very excited to welcome Coach Vandross to Old Dominion and the 757,” said ODU Head Coach Mike Jones. “He will be a great addition as we transition to the 2026-27 season and brings elite-level winning, player development, and building strong relationships. He will have an immediate impact on our program.”

Vandross arrives at Old Dominion with an extensive background in recruiting and player development. He has held coaching and recruiting roles at multiple collegiate programs, where he established a reputation for identifying and securing top talent. Vandross most recently served as an assistant coach at Virginia, where he spent 10 years with the Cavaliers program, the first three as UVA’s Director of Recruiting/Player Development. He was a part of Coach Tony Bennett’s staff that helped the Wahoos capture the national championship in 2019 and reach the Elite 8 in 2016.

He also spent five seasons as an assistant on the staff at Charlotte from 2011-15 after 13 years at Boston University, to include three seasons as the Terriers’ associate head coach. During his time in the Queen City, the 49ers captured the 2013 Great Alaska Shootout and 2014 Puerto Rico Tip-Off in addition to earning a bid to the 2013 NIT. Charlotte also received votes in the AP Top 25 and Coaches’ Polls during the 2013-14 season. At BU, he helped lead the Terriers to four postseason appearances, including one in the NCAA Tournament and three NIT appearances. In his new role, Vandross will oversee all aspects of the Monarchs’ recruiting efforts, including talent evaluation, relationship building, and roster management.
