NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion men’s basketball has its second meeting of the season with Marshall this Tuesday. Tipoff at the Cam Henderson Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Tuesday’s meeting with the Thundering Herd will be streamed on ESPN+ and Ted Alexander and Dennis Wolff will cover the action on ESPN Sports Radio 94.1. Live stats will also be available.
With only two games remaining in the regular season, only a few wins separate the Monarchs and five other teams in the Sun Belt standings. The 2026 Sun Belt Championship will be held March 3-9 at the Pensacola Bay Center in Pensacola, Florida. The Championship Final is scheduled for Monday, March 9 at 7 p.m. ET with the winner receiving the league’s automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA tournament. Series History
This will be the 34th meeting in the all-time series, which Marshall leads 17-16. The Monarchs hosted the Herd on Feb. 11, with the visitors rallying from a 17-point deficit to edge ODU, 81-79. Old Dominion had the ball with seconds left and Jordan Battle managed to get off a contested three-point attempt, but his shot was off and Marshall grabbed the rebound to hold on. LJ Thomas led ODU in the loss with 18 points and KC Shaw followed with 16.

The Monarchs (10-19, 6-10 Sun Belt) led by as many as 18 points in the first half, but Southern Miss took over in the second as ODU fell, 86-81 on Saturday afternoon in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Shaw paced the Monarchs with 18 points, Battle added 17 points and was a perfect 7-for-7 at the free-throw line, Thomas scored 15 points with six rebounds, and Jared Turner contributed 12 points on 4-for-9 shooting from beyond the arc.
ODU’s offense is anchored by Shaw (17.1 ppg), Battle (14.1 ppg), and Thomas (11.2 ppg). Battle has made a team-high 65 three-pointers and also leads the Monarchs with 85 assists and 44 steals. He is the second-best free-throw shooter in the Sun Belt, making 85.0% of his shots at the line. Jared Turner (6.0 ppg) is also a threat from distance with 48 made threes. The junior forward from Silver Spring, Maryland has knocked down multiple three-pointers in four of the last five games. Caelum Swanton-Rodger averages 8.1 ppg and leads the team with 141 rebounds (5.0 rog) and 39 blocks. Battle is close behind him with 134 boards (4.6 rpg), and Thomas owns 84 assists and 30 steals.
Old Dominion comes into Tuesday’s contest with the fifth-best scoring offense in the league, averaging 75.0 ppg. The Monarchs allow 77.0 ppg for a -2.0-scoring margin and are shooting 43.9% from the floor and 72.5% at the charity stripe. Their 34.4% shooting from long range ranks third in the conference and the team is also fourth in three-point percentage defense (32.2%) and fifth in both assists per game (13.0) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.18). The Monarchs are 250th in the latest NET rankings.

The Herd (18-11, 10-6 Sun Belt) is coming off a 79-75 loss at Coastal Carolina on Saturday. Marshall trailed by 13 with just over two minutes left in the game when Jalen Speer scored 13 straight points to cut the Chanticleer lead to 78-75 with 20 seconds left, but CCU held on for the victory. Speer scored a career-high 39 points in the loss.
Speer, a graduate guard from Gainesville, Florida, is Marshall’s leading scorer with 15.9 ppg. He ranks second in the SBC and 15th nationally with 233 three-point attempts. He’s also third in the league in field goal attempts (401), three-point shooting (36.9%), threes per game (2.97), and threes made (86). Speer leads the Sun Belt with 163 assists, 5.6 assists per game, and a 2.47 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Wyatt Fricks is second on the team in scoring with 14.8 ppg and ranks third in the conference with a 54.2% clip from the field. Noah Otshudi is the other player averaging double figures with 14.2 ppg and ranks third in the Sun Belt in free-throw shooting at 84.3%. On defense, Matt Van Komen (7.8 ppg) has grabbed a team-high 168 rebounds (7.6 rpg). He leads the conference and is fifth in the country with 2.64 blocks per game, and is also first in the SBC and 19th in Division I with 58 total blocks.
Marshall is currently second in the league in scoring with 80.7 ppg and is outscoring opponents by 3.8 points, allowing 76.8 ppg. The Herd leads the Sun Belt in three-point shooting (36.8%), threes per game (10.2), effective field goal percentage (54.5%), assists per game (16.7), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.43), and blocks per game (5.0). The team is second in fastbreak points (12.38) and third in field-goal shooting (46.3%). Marshall makes 73.2% of its shots at the line and is 148th in the latest NET rankings.
