MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Old Dominion men’s tennis kicked off the Battle in the ‘Boro with a 4-1 win over Rice on Friday afternoon.
Kabeer Kapasi and Yair Sarouk began the tournament for Rice with a 6-1 win over Felix Obermair and Jean-Karim Olivier de Sardan on court two, while teammates Petro Kuzmenok and Santiago Navarro downed Adam Majchrzak and Thomas Nelson 6-4 on court one, claiming the doubles point. Zech Hamrouni’s and Piet Steveker’s match against Tommy Czaplinski and Rafael Botran was suspended at 5-4 on court three.
No. 5 Aryan Saleh grabbed the first point of the day for ODU with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Czaplinski, and the Monarchs took the lead after Olivier de Sardan defeated Navarro (6-4, 6-3) on court two. Following suit, No. 4 Hamrouni bested Kapasi 7-5, 6-2, and Felix Obermair downed Botron (2-6, 6-2, 6-1) on court three to seal an Old Dominion 4-1 win.
No. 1 Majchrzak’s and No. 6 Steveker’s matches against Kuzmenok (6-4, 3-6, 1-4) and Gabriel Porras (4-6, 6-5) were suspended respectively.
Old Dominion competes against Middle Tennessee tomorrow, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. for day two of the tournament.
