NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion men’s basketball will wrap up the week with a 3 p.m. ET road game at Southern Miss on Saturday.

Series History

Saturday will mark the 18th meeting between the two programs, with ODU ahead in the all-time series, 13-4. The Monarchs have taken three of the last four games against the Golden Eagles, including a 74-71 victory when the teams met January 4 last season. Jaden Johnson made a driving layup with 36 seconds left and Sean Durugordon made a couple of late free throws. Robert Davis Jr. led Old Dominion with 18 points and Durugordon finished with 16 points and nine rebounds.

About ODU

The Monarchs (10-18, 6-9 Sun Belt) made it two wins in a row with an 83-72 defeat of Louisiana on Monday night in what marked ODU’s final home game of the regular season. All five starters for the Monarchs finished in double figures. Jordan Battle led with a season high 27 points after shooting 7-for-10 from the floor and 10-for-11 at the free-throw line.

KC Shaw is the team’s leading scorer and ranks fifth in the Sun Belt with 17.0 ppg. He is also fifth in the league with 156 made field goals. Battle follows Shaw with 14.0 ppg and is the second-best free-throw shooter in the conference with an 84.3% success rate at the line. The Norfolk native leads ODU with 63 made three-pointers, 83 assists, and 40 steals. LJ Thomas is the other Monarch averaging double figures with 11.1 ppg and ranks fifth in the SBC with a 1.70 assist-to-turnover ratio. Caelum Swanton-Rodger nets 8.3 ppg, has pulled down a team-high 139 rebounds (5.1 rpg), and has made 39 blocks.

Old Dominion comes into Saturday’s game with a -1.9-scoring margin as the Monarchs average 74.8 ppg, but allow 76.6 ppg. The team is shooting 43.9% from the field, including 34.0% from distance, and 72.3% at the line. Through games played on Feb. 16, ODU ranks third in the Sun Belt in three-point percentage defense (31.8%), fourth in turnovers per game (10.8), and fifth in scoring offense and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.22).

The Golden Eagles (14-14, 7-8 Sun Belt) defeated Troy, 69-65 last Saturday in Hattiesburg. Tylik Weeks paced the offense with 30 points in the second half, and Djahi Binet contributed a career-best 18 rebounds to go with 14 points for his ninth double-double of the season.

USM has three players scoring in double digits: Weeks paces the offense with 18.4 ppg, Isaac Taveras is second with 15.1 ppg, and Binet is third at 11.1 ppg. Weeks leads the Sun Belt and ranks seventh nationally with 165 made free throws. He’s also second in the conference in points (498), points per game, and free throw attempts (203) and is third in the SBC in field goals (164). For Binet, the graduate student from Nice, France is the Sun Belt leader in offensive rebounds per game (3.25), ranks second in double-doubles and total rebounds (227), and is fourth in rebounds per game (8.1). Curt Lewis (6.0 ppg) has knocked down 45 threes, and Israel Hart (7.4 ppg) is the other deep threat with 30 triples. Dylan Brumfield (8.7 ppg) owns 81 assists and 39 steals, both team highs. Binet and Tegra Izay (2.8 ppg) have made 27 and 24 blocks, respectively.

Southern Miss nets 73.4 ppg and allows 73.3 ppg for a +0.1-scoring margin. The Golden Eagles shoot 44.4% from the field, 29.2% from beyond the arc, and 74.0% at the charity stripe. They rank second in the SBC in free throws per game (17.8) and free-throw attempts per game (24.0), third in fastbreak points (11.54 ppg), fourth in free-throw shooting and rebounding margin (+3.0), and fifth in turnovers forced per game (12.29).

The Golden Eagles are 237th in the NET rankings.
