NORFOLK Va. - Old Dominion men's tennis closed out its doubleheader with two back-to-back wins against Richmond 6-1, and Norfolk State 4-3.
Doubles competition against the Spiders began with the Monarchs claiming the first point of the match as the No. 1 pair Thomas Nelson and Adam Majchrzak defeated Cole Brashear and Davis Wiley, 6-2. That was followed by a win from Zech Hamrouni and Piet Steveker defeating Charlie Burdell and Grant Cohen, 6-2. Felix Obermair and Jean-Karim Oliver De Sardan’s No. 2 doubles match against Paxton Pritchard and Sam Rathmanner would go unfinished to give the Monarchs the early lead.
Singles competition would grow the Monarch lead with Aryan Saleh defeating Pritchard (6-2,6-3), as teammate Felix Obermair would go on to defeat Sam Rathmanner (6-2, 6-1). Steveker grew the lead as he defeated Nathan Germino (6-0, 6-1), and in the same fashion Nelson defeated Cohen (6-4, 6-4). The tiebreaking match would go on to give the Spiders their lone point with Burdell defeating Hamrouni (6-7, 6-4, 10-8).
Against the Spartans, the Monarchs came out victorious as No. 1 doubles pair Oliver De Sardan and Obermair defeated Marcin Dojczynski and Patryk Kowal, 6-2. Hamrouni and Steveker would go on to defeat Marcin Andrzejczak and Przmek Nikolajuk 6-1 to give the Monarchs the doubles point. No. 2 doubles pair Saleh and Nelson's match against Boris Lunin and Szymon Janzen would go unfinished to send the match into singles.
The Spartans began to find their rhythm as Andrzeczak defeated Hamrouni (6-1, 6-4), and Dojczynski defeated Nelson (6-4, 4-6, 10-8), as well as a win from Kowal defeating Olivier De Sardan. But the Monarchs proved their reign with wins from Obermair over Malecki (6-3, 6-3), teammate Saleh defeated Janzen (6-3, 6-1), and Steveker defeated Simunovic (6-2, 6-1).
The Monarchs continue their homestand at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 13 against Virginia Tech at 6 p.m
