Men's Tennis Drops First Match of ITA Kickoff Weekend to Purdue

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Old Dominion men’s tennis dropped its opening ITA Kickoff Weekend match to Purdue, 4-1, on Friday afternoon.

The afternoon began in a gritty doubles battle. No. 1 Adam Majchrzak and Thomas Nelson fell to Purdue’s Maj Premzl and Stefan Simeunovic, 6-3, though No. 2 Jean-Karim Olivier de Sardan and Felix Obermair kept the Monarchs hopes alive by besting Henrik Villanger and Nour Fathalla, 6-3. For the doubles point, No. 3 Zech Hamrouni and Piet Steveker downed Jacob Lee and Juan David Valasquez, 7-5, to put ODU on the board.

Purdue began the singles matches with consecutive wins after No. 2 Villanger beat Yanis Moudnir (6-2, 6-2) and No. 3 David Valasquez downed Hamrouni (7-5, 6-2). No. 76 Fathalla then put the Boilermakers one point away from claiming the match with a win on court one over Majchrzak (6-3, 7-5), and to clinch the match, No. 6 Lee bested Steveker, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

No. 4 Jean-Karim Olivier de Sardan’s and No. 5 Aryan Saleh’s matches against respective opponents Premzl (5-7, 6-1, 3-2) and Nikola Jovic (6-7, 2-3) were suspended.

Old Dominion returns to the courts tomorrow, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. against North Alabama for the consolation championship.
