NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion men’s tennis completed its home opener weekend after falling to Yale 5-2 on Sunday afternoon.
ODU’s No. 1 Thomas Nelson and Adam Majchrzak began the match with a 6-2 win over Jason Shuler and Dylan Tsoi, though Yale’s No. 2 Vignesh Gogineni and Krish Gupta followed suit by downing Zech Hamrouni and Yanis Moundir (6-3). With the doubles point up for grabs, the Bulldogs took the lead with No. 3 Ethan Chung and Eric Li defeating Aryan Saleh and Piet Steveker, 6-3.
Yale continued to add to its lead with Shuler downing Hamrouni 6-3, 6-2 on court three and No. 38 Gogieni besting Yanis Moundir 6-2, 6-3 on court one. Majchrzak kept the Monarchs alive with a win on court two over No. 82 Edward Liao (6-4, 6-4), though Li sealed the Bulldog’s win after defeating Steveker in extra sets (6-1, 1-6, 6-0) on court six.
No. 5 Saleh continued playing, grabbing one more point for ODU against Gupta (7-5, 6-1), but No. 4 Chung gave Yale a 5-2 win, downing Jean-Karim Olivier de Sardan (4-6, 7-5, 10-7) in extra sets.
Old Dominion hits the road next weekend as the team travels to Columbus, Ohio to challenge Purdue on Friday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m.
