NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion men’s basketball hosts Coastal Carolina this Saturday in a 2 p.m. Sun Belt Conference game at Chartway Arena.

Series History
Saturday will mark the ninth meeting between the two programs with ODU leading the all-time series, 6-2. Old Dominion and Coastal Carolina first played each other on Dec. 15, 2001 in Norfolk, a game that went to the Monarchs, 81-67. ODU has won three straight against CCU and swept both meetings last season, winning 74-52 on Jan. 25 in Norfolk and 61-59 on Feb. 28 in Conway, South Carolina. The Monarchs are also 4-1 against the Chanticleers when playing at home.

The Monarchs (4-8, 1-0 Sun Belt) opened conference play with a 77-68 victory over James Madison in Wednesday’s TowneBank Royal Rivalry game. ODU put together a 10-0 run to close out the first half and was led by KC Shaw, who eclipsed 1,000 career points and tallied 22 points with nine rebounds. ODU snapped JMU’s nine-game win streak in the all-time series, and it was the Monarchs’ first win over the Dukes since a 67-42 final on Dec. 2, 2018 in Norfolk. This is also the second-straight season that Old Dominion has opened conference play with a win.
ODU’s offense is paced by Shaw’s 15.5 ppg. Also averaging double-digit scoring are Jordan Battle with 13.4 ppg and LJ Thomas at 12.3 ppg. The Monarchs have three options from beyond the arc: Robert Davis Jr. (9.1 ppg) has knocked down a team-high 22 threes, though Battle and Jared Turner (6.1 ppg) are right behind him with 21 made threes each. Battle is shooting 87.5% at the free-throw line, good for second in the Sun Belt, and he also ranks third in the league with 56 made free throws. Thomas and Battle own 35 and 34 assists, respectively.
Battle, a Norfolk native who transferred to ODU from Coastal Carolina, leads ODU on the glass with 68 rebounds and 5.7 rpg. Caelum Swanton-Rodger (7.2 ppg) is next with 58 boards and 4.8 rpg. Battle owns a team-high 18 steals, Thomas has 13, and Swanton-Rodger has made 17 blocks.
Old Dominion is scoring 74.3 ppg while allowing 77.3 ppg. The Monarchs enter Saturday’s game shooting 43.1% from the field, 32.5% from long range, and 75.0% at the line, which ranks fourth in the SBC. ODU ranks third in the conference in three-point percentage defense (31.1%).
Through games played on Dec. 18, the Monarchs are 225th in the NET rankings.
About Coastal Carolina
The Chanticleers (6-6, 0-1 Sun Belt) were in Boone, North Carolina on Thursday and dropped a 67-49 decision to App State. Tied 28-28 at halftime, the Mountaineers pulled away with a 17-3 run in the second half. RaSheed Jones led CCU with 13 points and seven rebounds and Reggie Hill followed with 11 points and seven boards.
Joshua Beadle is Coastal’s leading scorer at 14.4 ppg, Jones is second with 13.8 ppg, and AJ Dancler is third at 13.7 ppg. Beadle has attempted 158 shots from the floor, palcing him third in the SBC. Dancler and Jones have made 26 and 23 threes, respectively, and Jones is shooting 82.5% at the charity stripe with 33 makes on 40 attempts. Beadle is the team leader in assists with 38, though Jones has 32 and Dancler comes into Saturday with 31.
Reggie Hill (6.8 ppg) has grabbed 68 rebounds for 6.2 rpg, Dancler is second on the team with 62 rebounds and 5.2 rpg, and Tristan Thompson (5.3 ppg) is third with 60 boards and 5.0 rpg. Beadle, Dancler and Hill have combined for 39 steals, and Nadjrick Peat (3.4 ppg) leads CCU with 17 blocks.
As a team, the Chants are scoring 72.9 ppg while giving up 71.2 ppg for a +1.8-scoring margin. Coastal is shooting 40.2% from the floor, including 34.0% from the perimeter, and 68.2% at the line. CCU ranks third in the country with 31.83 defensive rebounds per game, 14th nationally in field goal percentage defense (37.3%), and 18th in rebounds per game (42.33). Coastal Carolina is second in the Sun Belt in both three-point percentage defense (29.5%) and turnovers per game (10.4).
Head coach Justin Gray is in his second year leading the program after spending three seasons at Western Carolina. CCU was picked to finish 13th in the Sun Belt Preseason Coaches’ Poll with Jones representing the Chanticleers on the Preseason All-Conference Second Team. The Chants went 10-22 overall last season and 3-15 against SBC opponents. Coastal has six returners and nine newcomers this season and is 236th in the latest NET rankings.
