NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion women’s basketball takes on the East Carolina Pirates on Friday, Nov. 21 in Greenville, N.C. at 11 a.m. and returns to Norfolk for a matchup against NC Central on Sunday, Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. at Chartway Arena.

Fans will be able to watch both games on ESPN+, Chip Tarkenton will provide play-by-play, and Kim Aston will add color commentary on Sunday’s matchup against the Eagles. Matthew Hatfield and Shonda Deberry can be heard on Fox Sports Radio 1310 AM and live stats will also be available.

LAST TIME OUT:

Old Dominion fell to East Carolina, 59-58 in overtime at Chartway Arena on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2024. En’Dya Buford had a team high 21 points on 60% shooting from the field and 66.7% from deep. But ECU’s Amiya Joyner had a game high 27 points and 17 rebounds. ODU led 48-41 with 3:40 remaining, then Joyner scored in the paint and Khia Miller netted a three pointer to trim the Monarchs’ lead to two. Joyner found her way to the free throw line with 1:41 remaining and leveled the game at 48. The Silver and Blue took a 53-51 lead with 16 seconds remaining thanks to a free throw by Simaru Fields, but Joyner found her way back to the line and made both her free throws with seven seconds remaining, Thompson would miss a three pointer, and the game would go to overtime. Joyner scored the game winning basket with six seconds remaining in OT, with an assist going to Morgan Moseley and ODU’s game winning attempt would go off the mark.

ODU dispatched the Eagles 83-52 on Sunday, Nov. 27, 2016. Old Dominion opened the game with a 14-0 run to secure the early lead and then used a 12-0 rally to begin the second half to establish a 20-point cushion that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest. Defensively, ODU held NC Central to just 29.4% shooting and forced 22 Eagle turnovers. The Monarchs shot 51.6% as a team and held a 52-4 advantage in points in the paint.

ABOUT ODU:

The Monarchs are on a three-game win streak and most recently defeated William & Mary, 56-53 in Williamsburg, Va. and Elizabeth City State (106-32) and Delaware (73-66) in Norfolk.

Fields, Simone Cunningham, En’Dya Buford, and Nevaeh Scott have started all four of the Monarchs' games. Fields is the Monarchs’ leading scorer (14 ppg) followed by Cunningham (11 ppg) and then Buford (10.8 ppg). Cunningham and Laila Walker are ODU’s leading rebounders, Cunningham grabs an average of 8.3 boards per game, and Walker brings in 7.3 per match. Buford and Fields have combined for 25 steals between them, Riley Stack and Cunningham have combined for 16 blocks for the Monarchs.

ODU holds a +19.5-scoring margin over its opponents this season. The Monarchs shoot 35.4% from the field and 27% from behind the arc, making an average of 5.8 per game. At the free throw line ODU has shot 77% and averages 15 makes per game. In the rebounding battle, Old Dominion has a +9.5-rebounding margin and grabs 51.3 per game. In the turnover battle, ODU has a +7.8-turnover margin and forces 24.5 per game.

ABOUT ECU:

The Pirates are 2-2 this season and are undefeated in two games at home. ECU has victories over UNCW (82-63) and Charleston Southern (91-62). Most recently they dropped a 84-68 loss to High Point on Sunday, Nov. 16.

East Carolina has had an unchanged lineup in all four of its games. Kennedy Fauntleroy has a team high 13 points per game followed by Anzhané Hutton with 12.8 points per game. Hutton has a team high 8.8 rebounds per game. Savannah Brooks has started every game and averages 8.5 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. Jayla Hearp and Keanna Rembert round out the starting five. Hearp averages 8 points and 2.2 rebounds per game and Rembert averages 6 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.

ABOUT NCCU:

North Carolina Central is 1-3 and its lone win of the season came against UNC Asheville (66-53). The Eagles are coming off a 75-60 loss against the College of Charleston on Tuesday, Nov. 18. NCCU plays Wake Forest on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. before meeting the Monarchs.

Aniya Finger leads the Eagles with a team high 12.5 points per game followed by bench spark Aysia Hinton’s 10.5 ppg. Morgan Callahan is the leading rebounder grabbing 7.5 per match followed by Finger’s 5.8. Najah Lane and Shakira Foster have both started all four games for the Eagles. Lane averages 5.3 points and 2.8 rebounds per game and Foster averages 3.8 points and 2.0 rebounds per game.

Old Dominion heads to Frisco, Texas to compete in the 2025 Hoopfest held at Comerica Center. The Monarchs take on Texas Tech on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 5:30 p.m. and Oregon on Thursday, Nov. 27 at noon.
