EARLYSVILLE, Va. - Old Dominion women’s rowing wrapped up competition at the Rivanna Romp on Sunday afternoon at the Rivanna Reservoir, hosted by the University of Virginia.
“While I think we were excited about the idea of racing up against some of the top teams in the country, I was a little disappointed with how the team approached the V8+ race because we definitely walked in being intimidated by the other teams,” said ODU head coach Brian Conley.
ODU matched up against the Cavaliers as well as Georgetown, Minnesota, Navy, and North Carolina. In the V8+ the Monarchs had two boats in the race, ODU A finished in 18th with a time of 15:38.03 and ODU B finished in 21st with a time of 16:10.88.
“Despite being intimidated, I think we learned a little about ourselves and saw some of what it is going to take to reach the highest levels of college rowing and that was ultimately our goal,” said Conley.
The Monarchs would have four boats set off in the V4+ race. ODU A finished in 20th with a time of 16:35.84, ODU B finished in 21st with a time of 17:14.79, ODU C finished 22nd with a time of 17:47.46, and ODU D finished in 23rd with a time of 19:31.89.
“I think it was a good ego check for us and helps us understand what we have to do now as we go into our winter training before the spring season,” said Conley. “We can’t understand that speed if we never see it before the spring season and overall, I think it was good to have raced this weekend. Now it’s time to get back to work.”
