NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion men’s basketball and crosstown rival Norfolk State will meet on the hardwood this Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Chartway Arena.

Tuesday will be a Military Appreciation game as well as a White Out.

Fans unable to attend will be able to watch the game on ESPN+ with Scott Jackson and Billy Mann on the call. Ted Alexander and Dennis Wolff will also cover the action on ESPN Sports Radio 94.1 live stats will be available.

Series History

ODU is ahead in the all-time series, 15-6, and has won five in a row against NSU. The two teams last met on Dec. 4, 2022 at Chartway Arena, with the Monarchs coming out on top, 68-62.

Old Dominion and Norfolk State announced in May that they will play a home-and-home series over the next two seasons. The Monarchs will play at Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall on Nov. 11, 2026. Both games will fall on Veterans Day in support of the military in the Hampton Roads area.

About ODU

The Monarchs (1-1) hosted Randolph College in their home opener last Thursday, Nov. 6 and came away with their first victory of the season, 93-53. ODU had four players finish in double figures: KC Shaw led the way with 22 points, LJ Thomas was next with 16, Jordan Battle had 15, and Caelum Swanton-Rodger finished with 10 points.

Shaw enters Tuesday’s game as ODU’s leading scorer at 16.5 ppg. Also averaging double figures are Thomas (14.5 ppg), Battle (12.5 ppg), and Swanton-Rodger (10.0 ppg). Battle, Zacch Wiggins (9.0 ppg), and Jared Turner (6.0 ppg) have all made three three-pointers each. Battle is tied for first in the SBC with a 100% success rate at the free-throw line, and he’s also third in the conference with 6.5 defensive rebounds per game. The transfer from Coastal Carolina has pulled down a team-high 13 boards so far, while Swanton-Rodger is close behind him with 11 (5.5 rpg). Thomas has dished out nine assists, Turner has made three blocks, and Thomas and Battle own three steals each.

Through the first two games, ODU is averaging 82.5 points while allowing 70 for a +12.5-scoring margin. The Monarchs are shooting 49.6% from the field, 30.4% from beyond the arc, and 77.5% at the free-throw line. Old Dominion is also outrebounding its opponents by 10.5 boards (42 to 31.5) and owns a +1.1 assist-to-turnover ratio. The team currently leads the Sun Belt with 19.5 fastbreak points per game; is second in the conference in field goal percentage, rebounds and defensive rebounds per game (32.0); and is third in the league in rebound margin and field goal percentage defense (37.7%).

About Norfolk State

The Spartans (2-1) opened the season with a 98-76 win over Washington Adventist on Nov. 3 and followed with a 119-55 victory over Regent on Nov. 5, setting a new program record for points in a game. NSU then hosted William & Mary this past Saturday, falling to the Tribe, 81-78. The Spartans led by 12, 63-51 with 9:44 to play in the second half, but W&M put together a 10-0 run and converted a couple of late free throws to complete the comeback. Redshirt freshman My’kel Jenkins was voted the MEAC Rookie of the Week on Monday after tallying 39 points with 16 rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and five steals through the team’s first three games.

NSU also has four players scoring in double figures. Anthony McComb III leads the way with 18.7 ppg. Devon Ellis is second on the team with 14.3 ppg, and Elijah Jamison and Jenkins are both netting 13.0 ppg. McComb has hit seven threes so far, followed by Jenkins with six makes from distance and Jordan Leaks (8.7 ppg) with five threes. Keyontae Lewis (5.7 rpg) and Jenkins (5.3 rpg) have combined for 33 rebounds. Jamison as the most assists with 13, Adrean Newton (8.0 ppg) has collected seven steals, and Jenkins and Jaquel Morris (1.7 ppg) have made three blocks each.

Norfolk State has a +27.7-scoring margin with the Spartans averaging 98.3 ppg while holding opponents to 70.7 ppg. The team is also shooting 51.7% from the floor, including 37.3% from the perimeter, and 68.1% at the charity stripe. NSU is 24th in the country with 22.67 fastbreak points per game and is 26th with 12.3 steals per game.

NSU is led by head coach Robert Jones, who is in his 13th season with the program. The Spartans received votes in the CollegeInside.com Preseason Mid Major Poll and are listed in the top spot of the website’s Preseason HBCU Power 5 ranking. Coming off their fourth-consecutive 20-win season, the Spartans were picked to repeat as MEAC champions in the league’s Preseason Poll.

NSU went 24-11 overall last year and 11-3 in conference play, securing a MEAC regular season co-championship title, a MEAC tournament title, and an NCAA tournament appearance against top-seeded Florida.
