CONWAY, S.C. - Old Dominion volleyball fell to Coastal Carolina in straight sets on Saturday afternoon at the HTC Center.

“Tough weekend for volleyball,” said ODU head coach Fred Chao. “Some moments of good for sure. But overall, we’re not performing at the level we need to yet.”

ODU went back-and-forth with the Chanticleers in the opening set and it was knotted at six apiece before CCU went on a 3-0 run. Coastal Carolina went up by four before a kill by Elisa Maggi and an attack error by Anzley Rinard cut the deficit to two, 9-11 in set one. A kill and a block assist by Jayln Stout and an error by ODU saw the Chanticleer lead rise to 14-10. Another kill by Stout, a kill by Kibi Huggins, and a solo block by Stout gave CCU a six-point lead, 17-11. The first set ended 25-17 after a service ace by Ava Wallis and a service error by ODU.

The second set was more competitive, after falling behind 5-2, ODU rattled off four-straight points to take its first advantage of the day, 6-5.  ODU grabbed a three point advantage midway through the set after back-to-back service aces by Adrienne Peji, an attack error by Stout. ODU grew the lead to four thanks to an ace from Madelyn Eslinger. CCU cut the deficit to one after a kill and ace by Stout and a kill by Emma Van Elslande brought the score to 16-15. The two teams went back-and-forth after reaching the 20-point threshold, the set was decided after a service ace by Stout and a kill by Van Elslande gave CCU a 27-25 win in set two to go up 2-0.

The Chanticleers opened the third set with a 4-0 run that grew to 7-1 but Old Dominion battled back to bring the Silver and Blue’s deficit to two (10-8) after a kill and an ace by Emma Schelah and an attack error by Rinard. CCU maintained its lead to the end of the set and after a kill by Bryanna Jones and an ace by Peji brought the score to 24-21 the Chanticleer’s forced an attack error on ODU and finished the game 25-21.

ODU finished with 38 kills and seven service aces, CCU had 43 kills and six aces on the day. Jones led ODU with 11 kills followed by Rakoski and Rita Benidio with seven each. Kyra Hampton finished with a team high 24 assists out of the 34 total assists from the Monarchs.

ODU Volleyball heads to Boone, N.C. for Sun Belt Conference action against the App State Mountaineers on Friday, Oct. 10 and Saturday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
