NORFOLK Va. - Old Dominion field hockey celebrated Senior Day with a 3-1 win over Georgetown on Friday afternoon at the LR Hill Sports Complex. 

Prior to the action, seniors Elsa Goldsberry, Sian Emslie, Sanci Molkenboer, Mackenzie Olsommer, and Ethan Skeete were recognized and honored as graduating student-athletes. 

The first quarter started out slow with the Monarchs (7-9, 5-2 BIG EAST) outshooting the Hoyas (5-12, 1-6 BIG EAST) 2-1. ODU’s Josie Painter recorded the two shots and a penalty corner which the Hoyas goalkeeper Ella Fahey saved. A shot by GU’s Ellie Johnson was blocked by the Monarch defense to close the first quarter. 

The Monarchs were first on the board in the first two minutes of the second quarter off the second attempt of a penalty corner by Madison Zalewski, who connected with Amelie Zielcke and was assisted by Emslie. A Georgetown penalty corner by Izzy Lee followed the score which was blocked by the ODU defense. Molkenboer took a shot which Fahey saved, followed by a blocked penalty corner by Zalewski, sending the game into halftime.

After the break, back-to-back ODU penalty corners by Zalewski connected with Serena Langendoen who shot wide, and Zielcke who was able to find the back of the net for the Monarchs second goal in just under five minutes of the quarter. A conceding shot by Molkenboer was saved by Fahey which Emslie was able to find and shoot wide. A penalty corner by Zalewski was passed to Langendoen who shot wide, followed by Zalewski who then shot wide as well to end the third quarter. 

In the fourth, the Monarchs found the back of the net with Emslie increasing the deficit 3-0 in less than three minutes of the period. Two continuous Georgetown penalty corners which were blocked and broken up by the Monarch defense. Their third penalty corner in a row produced the Hoyas lone goal by Ellie Johnson who made it past Suus Broers in the ninth minute of the final quarter. A Georgetown penalty corner by Riley Fitzgerald was broken up by the Monarch defense to then close out the final game of the regular season. 

The Monarchs outshot the Hoyas 17-4, as well as on corners 8-5. The Hoyas goalkeeper Fahey recorded six saves on the evening, Broers none. 

UP NEXT:

The Monarchs gear up for post season play in Lynchburg for the BIG EAST Conference Tournament where they will face the second seed UConn in the semifinals. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
