STORRS, CONN. - Old Dominion field hockey fell to UConn 2-1 in double overtime on Friday afternoon in Storrs, Connecticut. Sanci Molkenboer scored the lone goal for the Monarchs.

The Monarchs opened the game with a penalty corner by Madison Zalewski sent to Amelie Zielcke, which was saved by Huskies goalie Natalie Mckenna. This was followed by another penalty corner pass from Cosima Perleth to Sanci Molkenboer who made it past Mckenna for the first goal of the game in the 10th minute of the opening quarter. The Monarchs outshot the Huskies 2-0 to close the first quarter.

In the second quarter a penalty corner from Perleth was sent to Molkenboer which was saved by Mckenna. Back-to-back penalty corners for the Huskies were sent in by Sol Simone were broken up by the ODU defense and saved by goalkeeper Suus Broers. On another attempt, Simone was able to connect with Pien Prins in the last 30 seconds of the quarter to tie up the match 1-1, sending it into the half. 

After the break, Simone connected with Julia Bressler for a penalty corner which was saved by Broers. A set of four Monarch penalty corners from Madison Zalewski were denied by the UConn defense and saved by Mckenna to send the match into the final quarter. 

A slow fourth quarter produced a lone shot by the Monarchs by Isabella Decesaris and saved by Mckenna to send the tied match into overtime. 

In overtime, back-to-back penalty corners from Zalewski connected with Langendoen which were saved by the Huskie defense and Mckenna. With the teams still tied, the match went into a second period of overtime. 

After the break, UConn’s Simone was able to get past Broers into the net ending the match 2-1. 

"It’s a tough loss, especially given the way we played. We controlled most of the game, which shows in the statistics in shot count.

Overall we played a strong game. But we have to score our opportunities when we create them, whether in open play, corners or potential penalty strokes". Said Head Coach Andrew Griffiths

"It’s a lesson we will take into our next games, and we will likely meet Connecticut again in the Big East Tournament.

In the big picture, I am proud of how our players worked and played together. We just need to be one step stronger and finish it". Added Coach Griffiths 

The Monarchs outshot the Huskies 13-4 and led in corners 9-4. Broers registered two saves while Mckenna recorded seven. 

UP NEXT: 

The Monarchs head to Durham, North Carolina to face the Blue Devils at Jack Katz Stadium. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
