Majchrzak Leads Way for Monarchs in ITA Atlantic Regionals

Old Dominion men’s tennis competed in the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships, where the Monarchs competed against opponents in singles matches to advance through the bracket from Thursday, Oct. 9 to Monday, Oct. 13.

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Old Dominion men’s tennis competed in the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships, where the Monarchs competed against opponents in singles matches to advance through the bracket from Thursday, Oct. 9 to Monday, Oct. 13.

In the round of 64, four Monarchs moved past their opponents to continue tournament play. No. 9 Adam Majchrzak downed VCU’s No. 10 Gevorg Mnatsakanyan 6-1, 6-3, while No. 21 Yanis Moundir defeated No. 22 Guy Vorwerk from Liberty in extra sets (6-2, 2-6, 6-4). No. 44 Aryan Saleh and No. 61 Zechariah Hamrouni bested George Mason’s No. 43 Edgar Vilain (6-3, 5-7, 6-2) and VCU’s No. 62 Nicolo Consoni (6-2, 6-2) respectively.

No. 4 Piet Steveker fell to Virginia Tech’s No. 3 Drew Fishback in a gritty 7-6, 7-6 battle, while No. 32 Jean-Karim Olivier de Sardan also fell to Longwood’s No. 31 Daniel Borisov in extra sets (7-6, 1-6, 6-3). No. 33 Thomas Nelson and No. 58 Felix Obermair fell to respective opponents No. 34 Davis Wiley from Richmond (7-6, 6-4) and No. 57 Esteve Agusti from James Madison (6-1, 6-4).

To begin the round of 32, only Majchrzak was able to advance to the round of 16 after he was victorious against No. 11 Herrick Legaspi from Navy in extra sets (6-7, 6-3, 6-4). Moundir fell to William and Mary’s No. 24 Gur Trakhtenberg in extra sets as well (6-7, 6-2, 7-6), and Saleh was downed by VCU’s No. 41 Alfred Almasi (6-0, 7-6) while Hamrouni lost to Virginia’s No. 64 Jangjun Kim (7-6, 6-2).

Despite being the only Monarch left, Majchrzak continued to push past his opponents. He defeated Liberty’s No. 14 Ernst Gouws 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, to punch his ticket into the quarterfinals, though he would fall to No. 1 Rich Keegan from Virginia by a 6-4, 6-3 score.

Old Dominion continues action at the Farnsworth Hidden Dual in Princeton, N.J. from Friday, Oct. 31 to Sunday, Nov. 2.
