BOONE, N.C. – Old Dominion volleyball dropped its second match at App State this weekend, falling 3-0 to the Mountaineers on Saturday afternoon.

“Our team competed hard this weekend,” said ODU head coach Fred Chao. “Many of the sets came down to a couple errors that takes a lot more training and experience to overcome. Our attackers are becoming more effective and defense is holding its own. But at the end of the day, we missed out on execution at critical times. But overall, a better level of performance was reached this weekend.”

The Monarchs are now 3-14 overall and 0-6 in the Sun Belt.

App State 3, ODU 0

The Mountaineers (13-4, 4-2) put together a 5-0 run to start the first set, but an Elisa Maggi kill capped off a 6-0 response that put the Monarchs ahead, 10-8. A couple of App State attack errors extended that lead 14-10, but the home team caught up at 16-16. A late 3-0 push then allowed the Mountaineers to claim the set point at 25-23.

Rita Benidio served an ace as ODU led 5-2 early in the second set. Later, Kyra Hampton and Emma Schelah made back-to-back blocks for a 15-13 advantage. App State took over late though as the Monarchs dropped another set, 25-21.

In the third set, a 4-0 run by the Mountaineers gave them a 15-12 lead at the media timeout. The Monarchs won nine of the next 11 points as ODU went up 21-17. After App State burned a timeout, the Mountaineers put together a 5-0 run to regain control, 22-21. Katie Rakoski put away a ball from Hampton to tie the set at 23-23, but a couple of errors brought the match to an end at 25-23.

Maggi scored a team-high 15 kills and Rakoski also reached double figures with 10 kills. Hampton racked up 29 assists with seven digs and two blocks, Schelah served three aces, and Benidio and Adrienne Peji served two aces each. Maggi also led the Monarchs with nine digs, while Hampton and Peji followed with seven digs apiece.
