NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion field hockey fell to #12 Michigan 4-1 Sunday afternoon. Sian Emslie scored in the final minute for the lone ODU goal of the game. 

The Wolverines (6-3) were first on the board off of a penalty corner slotted in by Michigan's Eva Bernardy assisted by Abby Burnett and Julette Manzur in the first five minutes of the game with the Wolverines up 1-0. Another penalty corner pass for the Wolverines sent in by Mazur was denied in the defense and sent the game into the second quarter. 

The Monarchs (4-5) attempted to even the score with a penalty corner pass, Madison Zalewski sent the ball to Sanci Molkenboer whose shot went high in Michigan's territory. Another penalty corner pass from Zalewski to Serena Langendoen was denied by Michigan's goalkeeper Hala Silverstein with the save. The Wolverines were able to put another on the board with a goal by Dru Moffett with an assist from Lexi Patterson increasing the score 2-0 Michigan in the first three minutes of the period. A shot by Michigan’s Zoe Bormet was saved by ODU goalkeeper Suus Broers, who then found Wolverine Payton Maloney to make it past Broer’s for a third Michigan goal assisted by Bormet increasing the score to 3-0. Monarchs Josie Painter attempted to even the score with a penalty corner pass to Niccolette Saccomandi which was saved by Silverstein. Followed by another penalty corner pass by Cosima Perleth to Emslie which was saved by Silverstein in Wolverine territory. Another shot attempt by Michigan’s Abby Tamer was blocked by the ODU defense, sending the game into the half. 

After the break, a defensive corner pass sent in by Emmy Tran for Eva Bernardy was sent wide, followed by a shot by Natalie Millman to be saved by Broers. Tran was able to find the net with a goal assisted by Abby Burnett increasing the score to 4-0 early in the third quarter. Another defensive penalty corner pass for the Wolverines by Manzur passed to Tran was blocked by the ODU defense. Broers recorded another save from a shot off Maloney, and Michigan’s second goalkeeper of the game Caylie McMahon recorded a save off a shot by Molkenboer to send the game into the final quarter. 

Down a player, ODU’s Emslie attempted a shot which was saved by McMahon which was followed by another shot from Molkenboer, denied by the Wolverine defense. Zalewski with another penalty corner pass sent to Amelie Zielcke was shot wide to be followed by Michigan being down a player. With seconds left in the match, Emslie went one-on-one with McMahon and was able to make it past her putting the lone goal on the board for the Monarchs, ending the match to Michigan 4-1. 

The Monarchs recorded 10 shots, seven on goal, with four corners. Michigan recorded 10 shots, six on goal, and five corners. ODU goalkeeper Broers registered three saves, while Michigan’s Silverstein and McMahon recorded three and two.

The Monarchs will go on the road to continue conference play as they take on the Liberty Flames on October 3rd, in Lynchburg, Va. for a 3 p.m. start time.
