ODU Defeats Providence 2-0 in the BIG EAST Conference Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Old Dominion field hockey team defeated the Providence Friars 2-0 on Friday in the BIG EAST Conference opener. 

The Monarchs (3-4) were quick to be first on the board with Molkenboer giving the Monarchs the lead off assists from Madison Zewski and Sian Emslie in the fifth minute of the game making the score 1-0. The Friars’ (4-2) Carly Van Benten and Caroline Krebs attempted to even the score, but ODU goalkeeper Suus Broers shot down both attempts to close the period. 

The second quarter began with the same rhythm with another Monarch goal by Amelie Zielcke off assists by Cosima Perleth and Niccolette Saccomandi improving the score 2-0. In the third quarter the Friars kept up the same energy but could not connect with failed shots by Friars Macie Pennisi, Ari Ftorek, and penalty corners by Bo Martina at the ODU goal which Broers stopped to send the match into the final quarter. 

In the final quarter of the match ODU goalkeeper Broers was able to record another couple of saves in the Friars’ attempt to put one on the board, but were unsuccessful, ending the game 2-0 in favor of the Monarchs. 

The Monarchs recorded six shots, six corners, with five shots faced. The Friars recorded seven shots, six corners, and faced four shots. ODU goalkeeper Broers recorded five saves, Friars goalkeeper Porter recorded two on the day for Providence.
