NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion Field Hockey Falls to in-state foe Richmond, 2-1 Sunday afternoon at the L.R. Sports Complex with Sian Emslie recording the only goal for the Monarchs.

The first quarter started out slow on both sides of the pitch until a barrage of shots by ODU’s (2-4) Sanci Molkenboer, Josie Painter and Josi John, were all denied by Richmond’s (3-2) goalkeeper Amanda Cimillo. The Monarchs got off to a fast start in the second quarter after Emslie took a shot which was saved by Cimillo but fell back to her on the rebound. She was falling over but was able to jump while taking a swing which connected for the first goal of the game. The Monarchs’ defense held firm, and ODU held a 1-0 lead going into the half.

After the break, the Monarchs had the opportunity to score another goal with shot attempts by Emslie Serena Langendoen going off the mark. ODU had one penalty corner swung in by Madison Zalewski, but ODU did not create a shot from it. Richmond’s Clara Larripa carried the ball into Monarch territory and slapped a shot at goal. The shot bounced off Monarch goalkeeper Suus Broers' glove and into the net tying the match 1-1.

In the final quarter of the match the Spiders were quick off the jump following a failed Monarch corner pass and capitalized with the go-ahead goal from Alexa Derr. Attempting a woman-up advantage, Broers was relieved of her position and went to the bench. ODU had one final penalty corner, but Langendoen's shot was denied by Cimillo ending the match in the Spiders favor 2-1.

The Monarchs recorded nine shots and four corners as the Spiders had four shots and no corners in the game. Monarch keeper Broers recorded one save, and Spider keeper Cimillo recorded four saves on the day.
