NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion University Athletics has hired Elizabeth Jones as the associate athletic director for sports medicine, ODU Director of Athletics Dr. Wood Selig announced on Wednesday.

“We are excited to hire Liz Jones to lead our sports medicine department,” ODU Assistant to the AD and Development Officer Kieran Donohue said. “Liz is perfectly suited to grow and improve the already well-established sports medicine department at Old Dominion and guide us into a new era of even greater holistic care for our student-athletes.”

Jones is the first female head of sports medicine in ODU history. She is currently one of six female head athletic trainers in the Sun Belt Conference.

Jones comes to ODU after spending nearly five years at William & Mary. She worked with the men’s soccer team and assisted with football. She was elevated to an associate athletic trainer in 2023 before being named the head athletic trainer in 2024. She implemented manual therapy techniques, dry needling techniques, and functional rehabilitation programs into healthcare plans for her student-athletes and managed 11 athletic trainers while with the Tribe.

Prior to joining W&M, Jones worked as a clinical athletic trainer in the sports medicine department at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters.

Jones got her start in athletic training at Tiffin University (Ohio) in 2014 and worked with the Dragons for five years with a variety of sports, including football, baseball, cheerleading, swimming and diving and women’s lacrosse.

She earned both her undergraduate and master’s degree from Bloomsburg University (Pa.).
