ODU Field Hockey Releases 2025 Schedule

The Old Dominion Field Hockey team opens the 2025 season with an in-state battle against VCU at home and will host the 2023 National Champion’s North Carolina at the LR Hill Sports Complex in early October.

NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion Field Hockey team opens the 2025 season with an in-state battle against VCU at home and will host the 2023 National Champion’s North Carolina at the LR Hill Sports Complex in early October, as ODU Head Coach Andrew Griffiths announced the program's schedule on Thursday.

“We have a challenging schedule as usual, playing a number of the best teams in the country, that’s how we measure ourselves and our goal is to compete and beat these teams,” said Griffiths. “We have a couple of great non-conference home games, with Michigan and North Carolina coming to play on our home field. We have matches against traditional in-state rivals. And, as always, our conference rivalries will provide tough competition and some great games.”

The Monarchs will have two preseason scrimmages to ramp up ahead of the first game of the season, ODU will host Virginia on Wednesday, August 20 at 2 p.m. Old Dominion wraps up its preseason when they travel to Maryland on Sunday, August 24 at 2 p.m.

ODU opens the season on Friday, August 29 for a matchup with VCU at LR Hill Sports Complex at 5 p.m.  ODU leads the all-time series with the Rams 45-5-1 but fell 2-1 in overtime last season. William & Mary will travel to Norfolk for a 1 p.m. start on Sunday, August 31. Last season when the two programs met, Tess Jedeloo’s two goals fueled a 4-1 ODU victory in Williamsburg.

The Monarchs kick off September at Princeton as ODU travels to New Jersey on Friday, September 5 at 6 p.m. The two sides have not met since 2006 where ODU battled the Tigers twice, winning 5-0 in the regular season before losing 3-2 in overtime in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. 

Old Dominion will stay in New Jersey for a matchup against Penn on Sunday, September 7 at 11 a.m. The two programs have only faced off one time in their histories, in 1988. Old Dominion defeated Penn in the Semifinals of the NCAA Tournament, 4-0, before going on to defeat the Iowa Hawkeyes enroute to winning its fourth national championship in seven years.

Old Dominion takes on Wagner for the first time in program history when the Seahawks fly from Staten Island, New York to Norfolk on September 12 for a Friday, 5 p.m. match. ODU will stay at home for an in-state matchup against Richmond on Sunday, September 14 at 1 p.m. The Monarchs handed the Spiders a 3-0 defeat last season in the opening game of last year’s campaign thanks to two goals by Jedeloo and three assists by Frederique Zandbergen.

ODU hits the road to Rhode Island to open BIG EAST conference play at Providence on Friday, September 19 at 2:30 p.m. The Monarchs have a 14-1 all-time record against the Friars and defeated them last season 8-1.

Old Dominion hosts Quinnipiac on Friday, September 26 at 3 p.m. ODU defeated the Bobcats 2-1 in overtime last season thanks to an Emily Tammaro goal. The Monarchs will welcome Michigan to Norfolk for a game on Sunday, September 28 at noon. ODU traveled to Ann Arbor in 2023 but were defeated by the Wolverines 1-0 in overtime.

The Monarchs travel to Lynchburg, Virginia to take on Liberty in a BIG EAST matchup on Friday, October 3 at 3 p.m. Last season, Old Dominion had a thrilling 3-2 victory against the #11 Flames after Serena Langendoen converted a penalty corner just before the end of regulation. 

The Monarchs head back to Norfolk for a date with the 2023 National Champion North Carolina Tar Heels on October 5 at 1 p.m. at the LR Hill Sports Complex. It will be the 86th time the two programs have played each other with the most recent game coming last season in Chapel Hill, ODU were defeated 3-1. The Monarchs trail in the all-time series 35-48-2.

Old Dominion will trek to Pennsylvania to resume BIG EAST play in a matchup against Villanova on Friday, October 10 at 1 p.m. ODU defeated the Wildcats 2-1 last season thanks to Sanci Molkenboer and Jolene Ulichney finding the back of the net in the second half. 

The Monarchs return home to host the Temple Owls on Friday, October 17 at noon. ODU will seek to right the end of last season in front of its home fans as the Monarchs fell 2-1 in double overtime in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament last season.

ODU heads to Newark, Delaware for a game against the Blue Hens on Sunday, October 19 at 1 p.m. The Monarchs last played the Blue Hens on August 27, 2023 and fell 4-2 in Norfolk. Old Dominion has an all-time record of 14-5-1 against Delaware.

The Monarchs stay on the road and will next travel to Storrs, Connecticut for a matchup against the Huskies on Friday, October 24 at 1 p.m. ODU fell 3-1 on the final day of the regular season last season to the eventual BIG EAST Champs.

The Monarchs rounds its regular season out with a road game against Duke on Sunday, October 26 at 1 p.m. This will be the 48th game between the two programs and the Monarchs lead the all-time series 24-23.

ODU will have its final game and its Senior Day against Georgetown on Friday, October 31 at 2 p.m. at the LR Hill Sports Complex. Old Dominion defeated the Hoyas 5-0 last season at College Park thanks to two goals from Sian Emslie, one goal from Langendoen, and goals from Ulichney and Jedeloo to extend the Monarchs lead in the all-time series to 10-1.

The 2025 BIG EAST Tournament will be hosted by Liberty and begins on Friday, November 7 and the final will be held on Sunday, November 9.
