NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion rowing team will take on Saint Joseph’s for the first race of the spring season on March 15 at 10 a.m. in Norfolk.
“First race of the season is exciting. I think even more exciting as this group has come a long way from where they were just 3 months ago. I think that if we race like we have been practicing that will be a great day for the Monarchs,” said ODU Head Coach Brian Conley.
The race schedule will begin with the 2V4+ at 10 a.m. before the V4+ will take off at 10:20 a.m. followed by the 2V8+ crew at 10:40 a.m. The race day will be rounded out with the V8+ boat setting off at 11 a.m.
“The team is faster than we were last year as a whole. Racing on our home course for our first race of the season is always fantastic as it gives us the slight advantage with knowing the currents, tides, and even how the winds can play into things,” added Conley.
Old Dominion Rowing begins its first season in the Big 12 Conference and will race in the BIG 12 Championship held in Sarasota, Florida in Nathan Benderson Park. In the final Regatta of the fall season ODU collected three gold medals in the Frostbite Regatta. The Novice 8+, JV8, and the V4+ all came away with gold in Mercer, New Jersey.
“Our goals are simple for this weekend. We need to row the same way we have practiced. We need to execute the race plan. We need to respond to trust each other in the boat and respond when the coxswain needs something. SJU is always fast at the start of the year and we are looking forward to the challenge.” said Conley.
