NEW ORLEANS – The 2025 Old Dominion Football campaign opens on Saturday, Aug. 30 at Indiana and is highlighted by home games against Liberty, App State and a season-ending matchup with Georgia State, as the Sun Belt Conference announced the schedule on Friday morning.
“Our program is excited for the opportunity that this schedule represents,” ODU Head Coach Ricky Rahne said. “We have some excellent Sun Belt opponents coming to SB Ballard, including a great Thursday night game versus Troy.”
The Monarchs open the season with 2024 College Football Playoff participant, Indiana, facing off against the Hoosiers for the first time in program history. In 2024, the Big 10 foe won a program record 11 games, with their only two losses coming to the CFP finalists, Notre Dame and Ohio State.
ODU hosts North Carolina Central in the home opener at S.B. Ballard Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 6. The Monarchs will play the Eagles for the third time in program history but for the first time since 2010. ODU holds a 2-0 series lead over NCCU, while the Eagles went 8-3 during the 2024 season.
Old Dominion is back on the road on Saturday, Sept. 13 at Virginia Tech. The Hokies won in Norfolk last season and leads the all-time series 4-2, winning all three games that have been played in Blacksburg.
ODU has a bye following the trip to Virginia Tech and then returns home for two straight, hosting Liberty on Saturday, Sept. 27 and Coastal Carolina on Saturday, Oct. 4.
The meeting in Norfolk will be just the third time Liberty comes to ODU, as the last meeting Liberty topped the Monarchs 38-24, in 2022. The Flames hold a 4-1 series advantage over the Monarchs.
Old Dominion hosts CCU on October 4 in a series tied at two apiece. ODU won the first two games in the series, including an FCS Playoff win in 2012 and the first Sun Belt game between the two schools in 2021, but Coastal has won two-straight.
The Monarchs then hit the road for two straight games at Marshall and James Madison.
ODU travels to the Thundering Herd on Saturday, Oct. 11. Marshall leads the all-time series 9-1 and the Monarchs have not won in Huntington.
ODU stays on the road and heads to JMU on Saturday, Oct. 18. JMU has won three straight against the Monarchs, with the previous two meetings decided each by three points.
On Saturday, Nov. 1 the Monarchs travel to ULM to take on the Warhawks for the first time in program history. ULM finished 5-7 in 2024, its best season since 2019.
Following a bye, the Monarchs host Troy on Thursday, Nov. 13. It will be the second-straight season ODU plays a game on Thursday night, as last year ODU defeated Georgia Southern 47-19 on a Thursday night. The meeting with the Trojans will also be the first matchup on the gridiron between the two schools.
ODU’s final road contest of the season is in Statesboro against Georgia Southern on Saturday, Nov. 22. ODU has won two-straight against the Eagles after GS won the first three games of the series.
The regular season finale sees Old Dominion host Georgia State to conclude the regular season for the second time in three years. In 2023, the Monarchs defeated the Panthers on the final play of the game to clinch bowl eligibility. ODU hosts GSU on Saturday, Nov. 29 to cap the regular season slate.
