Norfolk, Va. - The Old Dominion rowing team finished action in the Head of the Occoquan, collecting three medals in the process.
“ODU had a really solid performance this weekend. We emphasized racing like we practice and not allowing race day to take us out of our plans. I think as a team we did that,” said ODU Head Coach Brian Conley.
The race was held by the Occoquan Boat Club on the Occoquan Reservoir at Sandy Run Regional Park. ODU competed in six events. The Women’s JV8+ “A”, Women’s freshmen/novice 8+, and Women’s freshmen/novice 4+ all earned a medal.
“We were able to walk away with three medals and that is always a great way to leave a regatta with some hardware. The freshmen/novice group were able to walk away with two medals on the weekend which just reinforces they are learning and getting stronger each week,” added Conley.
In the Varsity 4+, Old Dominion encountered an equipment failure despite starting with pace.
“We did have our top Varsity 4+ have an equipment failure and were moving really well before that happened, but despite that our crews stepped up competitively this weekend. Our cadence was lower than most teams which just means we have more room to grow and we know we can compete even with rowing at a lower rate.” said Conley.
ODU rowing is back in action for the final time of the fall schedule on November 9 where they will compete in the Frostbite Regatta in Mercer, N.J.
