High Point, N.C. - The Old Dominion Women’s Rowing team finished action in the High Point Autumn Rowing Festival, coming in second for the Dr. Lenny Peters Cup.
The first race of the day saw ODU face off against Oxford University and High Point University. Old Dominion V8 finished second with an official time of 0:17:01, Old Dominion 2V came in fourth with an official time of 0:17:56. Oxford University came out on top with an official time of 0:16:54.
“I was really happy with the team today. In the first race, the V8 found themselves down off the start, but at no point did they give up. The whole race was a battle with Oxford University and High Point University for the 4500 meter distance. Coxswain Ellie Gortz made a tight turn stealing the inside and better course from both teams and nearly beat Oxford. The 2V showed some drastic improvement this weekend as well.” said ODU Head Coach Brian Conley.
In the second race, Old Dominion was against Ukraine and HPU. Old Dominion V8 finished second with an official time of 0:11:25. Old Dominion 2V came in fourth with an official time of 0:12:01. Ukraine came out on top with an official time of 0:10:53.
“Both crews showed improvement in the second race too. The V8 and the 2V never were down to High Point. The V8 got to line up against the Ukrainian national team that included Olympians from this most recent Olympiad. Our goal was to stay with them as long as we could and I was happy with how they stayed in contact with them for the first part of the race.” said Conley.
At the end of the race day, Old Dominion V8 finished in second for the Dash for the Dr. Lenny Peters Cup. ODU 2V came in third ahead of Oxford U, coming in fourth. Ukraine finished first, winning the Dr. Lenny Peters Cup.
“The weekend I felt was a great opener for us overall. We still have a lot of work to do technically and in getting stronger for the spring, so I’m excited to see what the team does over the next few weeks and months.” Conley added.
ODU is back in action October 16, where they compete in the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass.
