NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University Field Hockey gets back to winning ways after defeating Providence Friday afternoon, 8-1.

“It was a good response after a lackluster weekend last week. The players took it upon themselves to make some changes and played much more together as a team.” Said ODU Head Coach Andrew Griffiths

The Monarchs were the first to concede, going down by one goal early in the first period with a goal by Florencia Talarico. ODU followed with eight-straight goals as the rout ensued. Tess Jedeloo secured a hat trick while both Sian Emslie and Amelie Zielcke had two goals each. Frederique Zandbergen finished the game with one goal and four assists.

“These games are much more about the mental side of the game than the skill or physical side. I’m pleased with the toughness in our play, and also the response after we started slowly and conceded an early goal,” said Griffiths

The victory brings ODU to a record of 6-4 this season. The Monarchs finished the game with 20 shots, 16 on goal, and 15 penalty corners.

Providence finished the game with three shots, two on goal, and did not secure a penalty corner.

Suus Broers logged 45 minutes in goal, securing one save. Providence’s Asia Porter logged 45 minutes in goal, and secured seven saves.

“It was a full team performance from across the board, unselfish play and attitudes, and they earned it. They also earned a good weekend off.” Griffiths added

ODU will next be in action on Thursday, October 10 when they take on Georgetown in College Park, Md. at 5 p.m.
